WAIT, the Australian government gives subsidies to non-citizens to buy housing??? The First Homeowner Grant is available to non-citizens??? What the actual fuck??

@BarbaraJents @DrewPavlou Hi Barbara, when we got the grant there was no option to become a citizen as a kiwi. I love it here and currently working through the process now that I’m eligible.

@wonwonate @DrewPavlou So why you don’t become citizens? It seems like you want to keep your feet in both camps - you’re either an Australian citizen or you’re not. Stop rorting the system. No wonder the country Is fooked.

@wonwonate @DrewPavlou Because there is a limited number of grants and you have taken one of them. That’s one fewer for a citizen.

@big_shaneoh @DrewPavlou I’ve addressed this before, laws in Australia meant if you arrived in Aus after 2001 as an NZ citizen then you were unable to become a citizen unless sponsored by your employer. Irrespective of how long you were here and what tax etc you’d paid. Or how long

@Downunderdazza @DrewPavlou The only way I could’ve got PR is to get sponsored from work. Up until Labor got in anyone from NZ arriving after 2001 had no options to become a citizen irrespective of how long they’d been here. It was a Howard gov thing.

@wonwonate @DrewPavlou Sympathise a little re Kiwi, but what are these non-options you speak of? You could still become PR then citizen or am I missing something?

@Downunderdazza @DrewPavlou I get that Dazza, however as a Kiwi, up until recently I didn’t have the option of becoming a citizen as I arrived after 2001. I’m not sure how being here with no safety net whatsoever is selfish? I love living here and have contributed the whole time?

@DrewPavlou @wonwonate As a migrant who has been here 20yrs+ I also believe only citizens should be eligible. Maybe that might encourage the likes of @wonwonate to become a citizen and have a bit more alignment and “skin in the game” with his adopted country rather than using it for selfish reasons
