@megha_lilly Instead of teaching students to feel the power of Shakespeare or Dante, academics teach them to look for "power structures" or "subversions."This makes the academics feel superior to the artists, when in reality, they are often incapable of creating anything of value themselves.

Brad Pitt is still alive by the way. They could have just asked him to play the ghost of Achilles and his signs of ageing would have just worked for him to show his decayed essence as a spirit in the underworld. The movie would have instantly become far more watchable. Ana de Armas as Athena. Henry Cavil as Odysseus. You could even get an AI to turn the Fagles translation into a screenplay. It's so freaking easy if they actually wanted to make a good movie and had 300 million dollars to do it!! AHHhhhh this makes me so mad.

When you stop judging people by their self proclaimed labels "right wing, catholic, protestant, atheist, leftist, feminist, anti-feminist, autistic, liberal" etc and instead watch what they DO, how they ACT in life and treat people, you get a much better picture of their values.

Vaxxed kids have milder, lower viral load, minimal transmission. Excluding refusers meaningfully protects infants in waiting rooms. Risk isn't equal

You can't mitigate that risk by banning unvaccinated kids (which would be a violation of the doctor's "duty" to "all children").

First... Other than in an emergency, doctors have the right to free association.
Second, if doctors believe unvaccinated kids are a threat to the rest of their patients, they have an absolute ethical duty to dismiss those patients.

@neoavatara @Riley_Gaines_ This is actually funny, ironic. I grew up in California my entire life, beginning in the '60's. Up until IDK when vaccination has become mandatory. When we were kids, many of the green, granola crowd refused to vaccinate and pediatricians were okay with it.

@dysmetric @drterrysimpson I agree.This doesn't prove serotonin deficiency causes depression(its heterogeneous) but it helps explain why SSRIs show efficacy over placebo in meta analyses. It doesn’t require the causal imbalance theory. Psychiatry has moved on from monoamine reductionism to other mechanisms

SSRIs selectively inhibit the serotonin transporter (SERT), raising synaptic serotonin and causing well established adaptations like desensitization of 5-HT1A autoreceptors. This enhances serotonergic transmission. These mechanisms are core pharmacology.

That is an extraordinary claim considering SSRIs have been studied in thousands of trials and used by millions of patients.
Psychiatry is not magic. Neither is depression.
We know serotonin signaling affects mood, anxiety, sleep, appetite, and obsessive thinking. We also know SSRIs help many people, fail some people, and cause side effects in some people. That is called medicine, not religion.
And “they don’t even know what they do” is one of those internet lines people use when they mistake incomplete understanding for total ignorance.
We still do not fully understand anesthesia either. I assure you we surgeons still use it.
