@ronnui_ The even/odd auxiliary route loop/spur really only applies to interstates, not US highways. I'm not opposed to converting to interstate designation as long as it makes sense with the number rules for interstates (I'm looking at you I-99) and isn't named after a living politician.

Aside from being stupid for the normal reasons, this is also dumb according to our highway numbering rules.
The US highway numbering system tells you that 287 is an auxiliary highway of 87, with the even first digit saying it connects more than once.

In Virginia, on route 66, they have express lanes. The speed limit is 70. On the main highway, the speed limit is 55. The road design is otherwise identical. There is no way to rationalize this difference on account of safety — the state is just making us slower to get revenue.

Many people misunderstand the point of traffic stops. They are not to regulate speeding. They exist to drag a net through the people likely to have warrants. Speed cameras are missing the point — speed limits are set to give probable cause, not describe appropriate travel speed.

Iowa has one of the fairest maps in the country.
They got it through a truly exceptional set of unique rules:
(1) Countries cannot be split.
(2) A completely non-partisan agency draws maps.
(3) This agency cannot look at most demographic data (including the partisan makeup of an area) or the addresses of incumbents.
(4) State senate districts must follow the boundaries of Congressional districts.
(5) Each state senate district contains two house districts that are fully contained within its boundaries.

Foreign visitors don't pay taxes, so if we don't charge them extra then Americans are paying twice
Tourist fees (for parks and other things) are insanely common, it's only the U.S. that people seem to think should be zero-cost and open to the entire planet
