From day one, mimic has been focused on a single goal: general-purpose dexterous manipulation. Today we're proud to announce the mimic hand M1 and the mimic wearable U1. We believe the only way to solve dexterous manipulation at scale is by going full-stack at the frontier of physical AI, building every layer ourselves around one fixed point, the human hand. The M1 is a highly backdrivable, tendon-driven hand that covers the full range of human capability, from heavy payloads to fine manipulation.

The hardest problems in AI aren't research problems anymore. They're deployment problems. It’s how we actually deliver real value, today, to build the future people want. That’s why, after 20 years in AI, my next step was inevitable: make robots do useful work for and alongside people, right now. Today, I am delighted to announce the launch of @WaldenRobotics to tackle just that. We started this year and are coming out of stealth today with a $300M seed round backed by some of the most serious companies and investors in the world. They have seen firsthand our general-purpose robots being useful in production on day one, and getting better every day after. You can see a glimpse of what we've been building in the video below. Physical AI has gone through a rapid phase transition, in part thanks to pioneering research from my friends and co-founders @RussTedrake , @Ben_Burchfiel , Siyuan Feng, @RaresAmbrus , and many others at Walden. But from our long experience working together with co-founders Kerri Fetzer-Borelli and Dave Johnson, we learned how hard it is to deploy cutting-edge AI in a real, live, incredibly sophisticated production environment with an intricate ballet of automation and human ingenuity. That’s why we deliberately created Walden Robotics as a full-stack, human-centric, customer-focused robotics company from the start: we seeded the company with a world-class team across hardware, software, AI, deployment, operations, product, and business talent, so we could continuously optimize our whole system end-to-end, deeply and purposefully, from real-world experience with real customers. The efficacy of this strategy speaks for itself: since February, our general-purpose robots have been doing useful work in production at a Toyota plant in North America, moving from first pilot to real work in under two months. Not a lab. Not a demo. Not a future promise. Real work on a real line, today, at one of the best large-scale manufacturers in the world, with general-purpose robots that get better every day. And this is just the beginning. Two ways to find us: If you run a manufacturing or logistics business and want robots that are widely useful now, not someday, let's talk. We own “hirearobot.com” for a reason! And if you want to build them: we're hiring across the company, from software, to hardware, AI, ops, product, business, and more. In particular, as the Chief Strategy Officer at Walden, I am recruiting for three incredibly impactful founding roles to fuel our agent-native go-to-market engine. Check out waldenrobotics.com/careers Let’s build together!

🎙️ Excited to introduce one of my favorite projects from the past year: TeleDexter, from the BIGAI dexterity team. It’s a stable, human-level dexterous teleoperation system and a suite of autonomous policies trained with it. Pen spinning, complex in-hand reorientation, and long-horizon tool use—once seen as the holy grail of manipulation—are now unlocked. 🧵👇 The hardware is already here; we have some incredible high-DoF robotic hands. The bottleneck? The controller. Most current systems are stuck in "quasi-static" grasping mode. Meanwhile, dynamic in-hand dexterity has remained severely limited. 🧠 To unlock the massive capabilities of human-like hands, we need to build an excellent "cerebellum" for dexterous hands. TeleDexter solves this with a novel co-tracking approach: it simultaneously tracks both human hand kinematics and object states, beautifully bridging the gap between human intent and robotic control. In order to train a better co-tracking policy that works robustly in the real world, we designed : (1) a hybrid reward design that combines consecutive goal reaching and dense tracking, (2) an action masking strategy during training that enhances sim2real performance, (3) a dexterous curriculum for learning the long-horizon interactions. Each design is inspired by numerous trials and countless real-world experiments. We’ve synthesized all the system details, engineering challenges, and core insights into our latest post. If you're interested in the future of dexterous manipulation, grab a coffee and check it out (9-min read): bigai-dex.github.io/blog/teledexter If you have more time, check out the paper: bigai-dex.github.io/blog/teledexte…

A stunning piece of engineering!! 1X unveils the new humanoid hand for NEO - 25 degrees of freedom: 22 fully actuated in the fingers and palm, plus 3 at the wrist. - The DoF are distributed anatomically rather than evenly, deliberately biased toward a thumb that genuinely opposes the fingers. - In-house tendon-driven, quasi-direct-drive running low gear ratios of ~5:1 to 15:1 vs the typical 100:1–200:1. - Motors live in the forearm and pull tendons through the wrist. This keeps the hand light and its inertia low while producing high forces. Sensing - All 25 DoF are natively force-controlled and fully backdrivable. Every joint doubles as a force sensor. - Very important, closed-loop proprioception: it always knows its own pose and effort without looking. - Tactile skin across the fingertips and surfaces measuring contact and shear. This helps with adaptive gripping in real time. Safety and durability - IP68 waterproof and food-safe, so it can wash its own hands. - Compliant by construction: the low gear ratios, tendon drive, and low distal inertia let external impacts safely backdrive the fingers. It yields when hit by a hammer or caught in a drawer. - Full finger assemblies validated to millions of cycles. Manufacturing - Deep vertical integration: in-house motors, custom electronics, and tendon systems. - Hundreds built already, with capacity to produce 10,000 hands this year.
