The winning move here is to throw away 4 green tiles on guess 3. Almost nobody can bring themselves to do it. After STORE, the answer is locked to S_ORE with the missing consonant at position 2 from the set {C, M, N, P, W}. Five candidates. Four guesses left. The intuitive play keeps the 4 greens: SCORE, SPORE, SWORE, SMORE. Each guess tests one consonant. Average: 5 guesses. Fail rate: 20%. The SNORE case is exactly that 20%, which is what happened here. The information-optimal play throws the greens away and plays a word that probes multiple candidates at once. CLAMP tests C, M, P in one guess. If any show up yellow or green, you know the answer. If they all go gray, the answer is SNORE or SWORE, and guess 4 is a coin flip. Average: 4.2 guesses. Fail rate: 0%. The psychology is brutal. 4 green tiles feel like 80% progress. This is the same reason traders hold losers too long and founders defend failing investments. Information theory has a clean answer. Human loss aversion doesn't care. 3Blue1Brown built a Wordle solver that averages 3.42 guesses using this exact principle. The bots beat the humans because the bots are willing to throw away greens. You can't play Wordle like a bot. That's the whole problem.

@aakashgupta Your method of CLAMP, SNORE, SWORE guarantees 4+ guesses though. You can leave CLAMP until guess 4 or 5 and have a chance to win on guess 3 without risking a loss. Depends on risk tolerance and how you value each outcome.
