I just got hit by a Copyright notice for using footage from NASA's Apollo 11 mission. I think the claimant is @Elevation_Pics which released the Apollo 11 documentary in Canada, and as you know that movie primarily used footage recorded by the US government, in my case these were engineering cameras used to monitor vehicle performance. The filmmakers of course scanned the footage there are several articles from 2019 which talk about the National Archive giving them access to these materials so they could be scanned and preserved for future generations. And as I understand it, there's a legal precedent: Bridgeman vs Corel that makes it clear that simply scanning a work is not sufficiently transformative to confer new copyright. does not give them rights to take ownership of public domain work created by the US government. However the Apollo 11 documentary with all its edits, overlays, and sound effects is sufficiently transformative to merit its own copyright. It is an excellent documentary and I can't recommend it highly enough, but when the national archives partnered with the filmmakers to digitize the content and I don't believe this distributor should be claiming copyright on the Apollo missions @YouTubeCreators
