@yaronhb @uncreativetom I like it! Reminds me of the good ol’ days and it’s honestly one of many reasons I use macOS and not Linux. And tbh, would you rather people start distributing .pkg files and run install wizards like Windows does? You absolutely can do that…

ppl complain about dragging the app bundle to the Applications folder... The real shitty Mac ux is still having to "eject" the installer for some reason. WHY

@uncreativetom What .dmg does is wrapping everything into a single virtual disk that preserved both parts

@uncreativetom Physical discs would have to be ejected, so the DMG file would allow you to have this “experience” virtually. This was a time when distributing and downloading software via the Internet, wasn’t a practical option as it is today

@uncreativetom Actually, when I think about it more in depth I realize the irony here: this was actually very for the era it was designed for; software used to be physically purchased on a disc, and one would have to copy the software from disc to the computer.

@uncreativetom @torturedMarcel A dmg it’s just a virtual “disc”, so when you open it it’s like you’re inserting it into the optical disc reader, then you copy the “file” (a.k.a. the application), and finally you need to reject the disc

@uncreativetom @torturedMarcel I think it’s related to how the installation works. Never really looked deep into it, but I think that a pkg installation modifies the system itself so it executes a program.
