Are LLMs just doing next token predictions? It is believed that if an LLM can accurately predict the next tokens in a Wikipedia entry, it essentially "learns" the information. But do pre-trained LLMs actually need to understand context sentences to solve this task? The answer is no!

Why do Sparse Autoencoders produce messy, fragmented features as they scale despite better reconstruction? One reason: they don't consider the hierarchical nature of language! Building semantic hierarchy into SAEs makes them more interpretable and way more efficient! 🧵

As a Celtics fan, my NeurIPS tradition in grad school has been watching them in the second round. There’ve been ups and downs, but Tatum always came through— G6 vs Bucks, G7 vs the Sixers, last year’s title run. Now, as I make my final NeurIPS push before graduating, this news really hits like a gut punch. Life can be cruel sometimes.
