@FreightAlley That implies all the revenue numbers were gross not net. Most successful marketplaces report net revenue (and maybe gross volume).

I called a dealer recently about a car I want to buy. He quoted me 5k over msrp. I told him the same car at another dealer is at msrp at buy-it-now price. He said his loyal customers was willing to pay at the price he wants. Lesson: never be loyal customer to a dealer.

@GergelyOrosz Question: before this did they pay junior engineer more to match the sr pay scale (artificially inflated jr Eng pay, hence your cost argument) or do they simply not hire junior engineers? I never quite understood that.

What I am writing about: why Netflix introduced levels for software engineers after 25 years of having a single level ("Senior Software Engineer") and the vibes amongst engineers. Netflix really had an incredible run with this single level. Scaled it up to ~2,000 engineers (!)

As a fun stat I invested in ~10 startups (small checks) There is no correlation between a company sending updates and success so far Some are killing it: have zero need to send updates. The reality is many investors like getting these updates. If you’re a founder you do you!
Ankur Nagpal@ankurnagpal

~10% of founders we back reliably send an investor update on the 1st every month Even if it's a holiday or weekend, the update is out Interestingly, their startups are doing much better than the median startup in our portfolio Correlation is not causation but still interesting

@GergelyOrosz I think the morale of the story is that when you remove a test that catches YOUR regression, it has nothing to do with culture. It’s just your poor ability to read and understand code. Don’t blame a company’s culture for your poor engineering.

I always find it interesting when engineers from other companies join and bring some of their eng culture with them. I will never forget an iOS eng from Facebook on a another team who did a PR, which code broke one of our tests, so he deleted the test & force landed changes. 🤯

When I say that existing solutions are terrible, I mean it. At one point someone from Pluralsight Flow reached out asking for feedback. Told them there’s not a single for high-performance teams there and my honest feedback is they need to throw it all out and start again.
Gergely Orosz@GergelyOrosz

I cannot believe companies are using a tool like Pluralsight flow for sw engineers. It measures targets like coding days, lines of code & target impact (whatever that is). It's the definition of micromanagement. Good luck to anyone managed by this software. From an ad they run:

Proud to be an advisor+investor at @DeveloperXM. “How can we measure sw dev teams in ways that *actually* work and help” is a question there are mostly only terrible solutions for. The team at DX is the first one I came across that offers a sensible approach. Just launched:

For the same token, why aren't tech company founders technical anymore? I'm not saying everyone has to write a ton of code. But I bet a significant % of tech founders don't even understand the high level architectural decisions their team makes.
Elon Musk@elonmusk

I strongly believe that all managers in a technical area must be technically excellent. Managers in software must write great software or it’s like being a cavalry captain who can’t ride a horse!
