Correct, and that teen was an absolute idiot to do so. However there are reasonable and unreasonable punishments for crimes around the world. A simple litmus test would be “is the punishment for this crime common and accepted around the world”. For the poster guy, it’s considered a inhumane punishment in 95% of the countries. For illegal entry, deportation is considered normal for 100% of the countries.

Americans will say 15 years of hard labor is too much for a tourist who stole a poster but that dying in a makeshift prison is a just punishment for overstaying your visa

There is 0 chance of ending up in a makeshift prison if you self deport. They will even scrub your record clean so you can reapply for entry without having a deportation on your record. Also there are government resources to help you self deport home even if you are an illegal. On top of that these make shift prisons are literally just holding cells to wait on transport to your country of origin. Most are there for less than a week. If you die in there its tragic but no more so than if they died in our streets or elsewhere.
