@DanFriedman81 Manhattan is actually a better place to be retired than to have a job. New York taxes are actually kind to retirees, not taxing social security and exluding the first $20,000 of other retirement income (pensions, 401K withdrawals, etc), per person, from tax.

People were outraged at the $500k couple, but the underappreciated aspect of the story is that the woman making $36k lives in the same neighborhood and leads a similar lifestyle, minus saving $10k per month, because she is a beneficiary of various subsidies, including a rent stabilized apartment. New York is unaffordable for some people, because the state and city are bleeding those people to give free stuff to other people, for whom New York is free.

The first time I visited San Francisco, I was eating a burger on the patio of some fast casual spot when a homeless guy came up and asked me to buy him a burger and fries. Normally I ignore it, but I was feeling generous. I went inside, ordered it, came back out, and handed it to him. He opens the burger, sees onions, immediately starts yelling at me, and then throws the whole thing on the ground. While he’s screaming about the onions, the owner comes out with a broom and chases him off. That was the last time I ever went out of my way to buy a homeless person food.
