The kaffiyah is a political statement. I thought religious leaders are supposed to stay away from politics. Isn’t any sort of nationalism frowned upon? Hypocrite.

The outrage over temporary lack of access to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre while Iran is trying to bomb it highlights one of the reasons I left Catholicism. There is an obsession with ritual over the heart of faith. You don’t have to worship THERE bc it’s Palm Sunday. Christ wants you to worship Him & preach His death and resurrection. He doesn’t care if you do it with a yearly procession in a certain place. Now if worship itself was banned (as it is in many Islamic countries), then that would be heinous. But it’s not. A Christian site (along with Jewish sites like the Western Wall) is simply closed while an Islamic regime is trying to bomb it. People who say they are filled with grief and horror not to worship in this exact spot miss the heart of Palm Sunday.

JUST IN: Israel says they are coming up with a “plan” to allow church leaders to worship at the holy site “in the coming days” after Cardinal Pizzaballa was blocked from entering the Church of the Holy Sepulchre on Palm Sunday. Netanyahu’s office has released the following statement: “Over the past several days, Iran has repeatedly targeted the holy sites of all three monotheistic religions in Jerusalem with ballistic missiles. In one strike, missile fragments crashed meters from the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. As a result, Israel has temporarily asked worshippers from all faiths not to worship at the holy sites in Jerusalem's Old City to protect them. Today, out of special concern for his safety, Jerusalem police prevented the Latin Patriarch Cardinal Pizzaballa from holding mass this morning at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Again, there was no malicious intent whatsoever, only concern for his safety and that of his party. However, given the holiness of the week leading up to Easter for the world's Christians, Israel's security arms are putting together a plan to enable church leaders to worship at the holy site in the coming days.” Video: tzogho / tt.

Fine, but you failed to adequately explain that there is a very pragmatic reason why the Al-Aqsa Mount, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher and the Western Wall have all been strictly closed during the war. They are ALL located in the Old City, where there are no access roads in the event of an emergency in the wake of a missile fall. This is not a remote scenario, as shrapnel has already fallen within the Old City's walls. Prayers for Palm Sunday have taken place in other churches in Jerusalem and throughout Israel. Moslems missed prayer at Al-Aqsa during Ramadan due to the Home Front restrictions, and Jews missed out praying at the Western Wall for Shabbat Hagadol, the most significant Shabbat prior to Passover. The Latin Patriarch was well aware of this, and, unfortunately, there is a political taint to his complaint.

Wondering how proud Jesus would be of his acting today. He knew about the restrictions. Could have made a phone call to coordinate since it was so important. Instead he just showed up and expected a red carpet but was shown the door, for his safety. He threw a political stunt. He let 10 hours go by. Watched the world condemn Israel. Got Bibi to intervene. Got what he wanted. Then confessed he was treated with respect and knew about the restriction. He is a savage and should be recalled immediately for causing an international incident because his ego was bruised. And if you are still defending him, GFY.

We’ve known for weeks that the holy sites in Jerusalem were going to be closed due to the war but Pizaballa still went with the purpose of causing this outrage. This was a political stunt. Shameful.

Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa- absolute class. After being briefly denied entry to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre on Palm Sunday due to wartime restrictions, he didn’t lash out or point fingers. He recognized the reality, called it a misunderstanding, and kept the focus on safety and faith.

@BillyHoag0311 So incredibly stupid. My pastor & every pastor I've ever had reads Scripture & then there's discussion on how it applies to us today. In the Catholic Church, scripture is read & then the priest starts singing in some deep monk voice like he's auditioning for a horror movie.

Protestants: “Catholics don’t even read their Bible or talk about it in Mass” Catholic reading in the Mass for today literally in every parish worldwide: (Just the Gospel portion) Matthew 26:14—27:66 128 verses in ONE reading. Protestants: “idk I just heard my pastor say it, and he’s always right”

JUST IN: Israeli Police prevented Cardinal Pizzaballa from entering the Church of the Holy Sepulchre today, as he went to say Mass. @LPJerusalem calls it a “grave precedent” which “constitutes a manifestly unreasonable and grossly disproportionate measure.” Full statement from @LPJerusalem below —— Joint Press Release The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem and the Custody of the Holy Land Holy City of Jerusalem Palm Sunday, 29 March 2026 This morning, the Israeli Police prevented the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, His Beatitude Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Head of the Catholic Church in the Holy Land, together with the Custos of the Holy Land, the Most Reverend Fr. Francesco Ielpo, OFM, the official Guardian of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, from entering the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, as they made their way to celebrate the Palm Sunday Mass. The two were stopped en route, while proceeding privately and without any characteristics of a procession or ceremonial act, and were compelled to turn back. As a result, and for the first time in centuries, the Heads of the Church were prevented from celebrating the Palm Sunday Mass at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. This incident is a grave precedent, and disregard the sensibilities of billions of people around the world who, during this week, look to Jerusalem. The Heads of the Churches have acted with full responsibility and, since the outset of the war, have complied with all imposed restrictions: public gatherings were cancelled, attendance was prohibited, and arrangements were made to broadcast the celebrations to hundreds of millions of faithful worldwide, who, during these days of Easter, turn their eyes to Jerusalem and to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Preventing the entry of the Cardinal and the Custos, who bear the highest ecclesiastical responsibility for the Catholic Church and the Holy Places, constitutes a manifestly unreasonable and grossly disproportionate measure. This hasty and fundamentally flawed decision, tainted by improper considerations, represents an extreme departure from basic principles of reasonableness, freedom of worship, and respect for the Status Quo. The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem and the Custody of the Holy Land express their profound sorrow to the Christian faithful in the Holy Land and throughout the world that prayer on one of the most sacred days of the Christian calendar has thus been prevented.

This is the Western Wall RIGHT NOW! The holiest place where Jews can pray. Always crowded. Right now it is EMPTY. JEWS ARE NOT ALLOWED to gather there. It's not because of discrimination. It is BECAUSE OF WAR.

I just called the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, His Beatitude Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, to express my great sorrow over this morning's unfortunate incident in the Old City of Jerusalem, in which Cardinal Pizzaballa and the Custos of the Holy Land, the Most Reverend Fr. Francesco Ielpo, were prevented from entering the Church of the Holy Sepulchre for prayers amid the ongoing security situation. I clarified that the incident stemmed from security concerns due to the continuous threat of missile attacks from the Iranian terror regime against the civilian population in Israel, following previous incidents in which Iranian missiles fell in the area of the Old City of Jerusalem in recent days. I reaffirmed the State of Israel's unwavering commitment to freedom of religion for all faiths and to upholding the status quo at the holy sites of Jerusalem.
