@Petersbrooking @FutbolKicks @swearimnotpaul Great point but realistically very few people can afford to follow their team around. I think the US broke attendance record numbers due to people from those nations living in those states attending the games.

@FutbolKicks @swearimnotpaul The USA is shit because it’s such a huge country. If you’re following your team from match to match and round to round then England is far better. Saying your hotels are great means nothing if you have to travel two thousand miles every round to see your team.

The USSF will determine how soccer will grow and change in America. Only they can get the MLS and the USL on the same page, lobby the government for support, and create avenues for more free development academies. We are all at their mercy.
Keith Zinyemba@ziny96194

@water_tre I think people now are aware of the root of these problems. I think it will be wise now to start educating people how to solve this issue. Is soccer a Congress thing or how can people vote to make the changes.i haven't seen these videos yet.

This whole article is another example of why Zlatan, Beckham, and Pochettino have called out the culture of American sports. Our star Christian Pulisic was actively trying to engage in “Load Management” last year during the training camp. This type of stuff just shows where we are as a culture. The lead up to the biggest tournament of your life, you are load managing? Load management will be the death of all sports in America. Especially, Basketball and American Football.
Tom Bogert@tombogert

🇺🇸 From the inside read of the USMNT World Cup campaign... which really started when Mauricio Pochettino took over and found some culture shock: “The situation was worse than we really believed,” Pochettino said last month. Ahead of their first training camp in Austin, Texas, that October, he and his staff expected to meet players who “would be so desperate to help (and) come to the national team.” Instead, “we received a big punch,” he recalled. They felt they were the only ones excited for the World Cup to start. Christian Pulisic, the team’s star, left that camp early to return to AC Milan, a decision that was described as “load management” and roundly criticized by U.S. national team veterans, including Tim Howard and Alexi Lalas. Pochettino went along with that plan publicly, but it was symptomatic of dynamics that had to be fixed. He encountered players who had too much power, who dictated time off, and who sometimes used it for golf outings or meals with friends. Pochettino felt he had to strip away that power. The teardown was, at times, tumultuous. A March 2025 window, which culminated with losses to Panama and Canada, “was painful,” he’d later say. “But it was necessary … for the players to realize that (doing things) this way, it is impossible to arrive in a good condition for the World Cup.” A big read, with @PaulTenorio and @HenryBushnell nytimes.com/athletic/74291…

@ManagerTactical I feel like people now understand the problem.we need to put action behind this movement. Do we call our Congress people or what ?I worry that with no action this momentum will fizzle out after the NFL and NBA kicks off.

It’s crazy that a former USMNT 🇺🇸 coach/current MLS coach is clueless towards the reasons why we don’t develop top talent… it has nothing to do with coaches or MLS owners committing to sh*t. It’s culture + the lack of an open merit based pyramid.

@MarkT1970 @StanCollymore How does one become talented? In youth soccer, that's the catch that london donovan and everyone is talking about. You got to pay for your kid to play with other talented kids .

@StanCollymore Stan, there are different options available in each sport. If you want to keep costs down, there are local options and school sports. If a kid is especially talented, my experience is clubs will find ways to keep them around. Try not to buy into the overdramatic hyperbole.

American friends, how much do you pay for kids basketball, American football, baseball, athletics etc? Genuinely fascinated to know how this works. Thank you.
James Q Bentley@JamesQBentley

@StanCollymore Out of interest, what is the equivalent position for American sports? Presumably not as financially prohibitive because they are played in schools? (Btw - been enjoying your WC coverage last few weeks 👍)

@bay_spray @PaulSpacey Yeah no, it doesn't work that way. I remember when the great Michael jordan tried to play baseball. If players start early with good coaching,I do believe a good number out of those NFL and basketball players will rise to the top and be better be able to be a top 10 team.

@ziny96194 @PaulSpacey That's my point. The idea of "elite athlete" that American's have does not transfer to soccer. Folks keep listing of NFL players and arguing they'd dominate international soccer.

USMNT player Alex Freeman is the son of an NFL WR with incredible genetics. He is the *athlete* you keep talking about. He is a good professional soccer player but not world class because the bar for this global sport is so high.

As always: I enjoy pro/rel. I’ve lived it. Nothing stopping a pro/rel alternative structure right now in US. I'll support it. But it’s not a panacea and it shouldn’t be mandated. Don’t tell others how to run their biz. Build a better mousetrap and let the customer/market decide.
Richard Nwanguma@R_Nwanguma93

@AlexiLalas Alright Cranbrook. This is what I'm yelling about. If not publicly subsidized youth soccer, where are you on pro/rel in America? You played in Serie A, you know shit hits different when the stakes get raised

@PaulSpacey @bay_spray Buff doesn't equal good athletes. Many sports athletes are not considered buff.this is not a good argument. Not only that many wide receivers don't even look like that.

@AndrewW31820212 @StevieJ64099245 @FIFABrit I agree,if I can add that the USA's most superior athletes have a similar storyline and it's a need to get out of a tough socioeconomic situation, "a way out". Top soccer league salaries are not a topic of conversation on ESPN or fox sports ,hence no motivation for soccer.

@ziny96194 @StevieJ64099245 @FIFABrit It will yes inevitably. The issue of catching up is that the top counties live and breathe football. We talk about it at work, schools all week. All support a team some follow them home and away. Its a way of life in these countries so dedication isnt a problem

I’m getting so tired of these American athlete posts now Every single one of them says something along the lines of “if we trained our best athletes in the best soccer academies, we’d have the best players” Congrats. You just created Adama Traore

@Mark_D_Bertram @FelipeCar I often feel sad for extremely athletic kids going to Georgia and Alabama and knowing that only 90% of those kids in power 5 school will see their name on the draft board. Soccer people need to strike while the iron is hot.

@Mark_D_Bertram @FelipeCar So I am involved in football , I think it can work. Most football players these days are ranked by freshman year going to junior year in high school, sad but scouting is now happening in middle school, soccer coaching influence to specialize needs to happen at this stage too.

@TheBolivianYank We are a bug country. It should be state—-to national. UPSL kinda does that but just for playoffs. State —- d3—— and so on. Each state can manage their own differently according to their own local needs.

@cdwetzel1 @AlexiLalas I am glad Thiery and Zlatan exposed him.talent is there, I am a big football guy in the south. Many kids that play football at Georgia or Alabama about 90% of those kids don't get drafted and are left wondering what to do next. It will help if soccer is their second sport.

Why shouldn’t a youth soccer coach want and deserve to make as much money as possible? If someone is really good at their job they should maximize their value.
Jim@JimJim50863703

@AlexiLalas Yes, the point of coaching youth soccer should not be for a coach to make as much money as possible. If you want to make money coaching soccer, coach at higher levels and not youths.

@FelipeCar Is it not possible for someone to play football or basketball and also play soccer as a second sport? This is a legit question facing the USA today? I believe this needs to change or we will continue witnessing the same result every world cup.

@FelipeCar Us soccer needs to invest in the kids that play football and basketball our best athletes. Soccer should be their backup plan if NFL dreams fall apart.
