Just sickening. Today a major report on the savage sexual violence carried out by Hamas on Oct 7. is released, backed by 10,000s of pieces of evidence. So yesterday the @nytimes published a blood libel built on lies to deflect from it. Never read the NYT. Never fund them.

BILL MAHER: “If there’s one issue which makes me say to the far left, ‘Stop asking me why I make fun of the left more than I used to’ — [Israel] is it. This is why.” “You’re morally goofy. You’re ignorant. You don’t know history. You don’t know the present either.” “They put that whole thing out for the longest time about how Israel was starving the Palestinian people… People were starving because Hamas stole all the food!” FETTERMAN: “Exactly!” MAHER: “Because Hamas wants the people to die. First of all, they love being martyrs. Let’s just not gloss over that.” “That’s part of the whole religion-dominated culture — martyrdom is good… That’s why they strapped bombs to children. Okay?” “So again, you’re morally goofy if this is the team you want to be on.” “And Israel didn’t starve them… No other nation on earth at war would ever be even asked to feed their enemy.”

@ToKTeacher @DrBrianKeating @MakingSenseHQ I'd say you've utterly discredited yourself as any expert on epistemology, let alone "epistemology 101". Someone with basic knowledge of epistemology doesn't flagrantly contradict himself multiple times and ignore arguments contrary to what he claims to believe.

Sam Harris on why consciousness is more certain than the universe — and why free will is a different problem entirely Pulling out a clip from my conversation with Sam Harris (@MakingSenseHQ) where he draws an asymmetry I think is worth sitting with. His claim: consciousness is the one thing in the universe that can't be an illusion — even more certain than physics. We could be brains in vats, in the matrix, on an alien supercomputer. None of it changes the fact that something seems to be happening. That seeming IS consciousness. Free will? Different story. Sam argues it's not just illusory but incoherent — provably so, regardless of how you tune determinism vs quantum indeterminism. He agrees with Sapolsky on the conclusion but adds a unique contribution on the experience of free will itself. Curious what the community thinks. Does the consciousness-as-bedrock argument hold under closer inspection, or is it just Descartes in new clothing?

Jews force open borders, immigration, diversity and inclusion for White Christian Western Countries as they have an ethnostate, closed borders, nationalism and assimilation in theirs. The single largest form of theft in America is wage theft. $50 billion a year are stolen from American workers. If a billionaire amasses their wealth by underpaying their full-time workers so severely that they must rely on food assistance and government programs to survive, then no, that wealth was not earned by one individual - it was a wealth transfer subsidized by underpaid American workers and the public who get stuck with the bill for large corporations free-riding off our systems. The point is less about individual morality. It’s more about how our current economic reality of shattering inequality rewards screwing over workers and exploiting essential systems at scale. We’re talking monopoly power. Rent-seeking. Wage theft. Profiteering. Stock buybacks. Destabilizing housing markets. Companies using SNAP/EBT to underwrite their wages. Massive government subsidies or contracts to corporations following lobbying and dark money in politics with little to no oversight or accountability. Some people get enraged that I draw attention to this. That’s on them. Let them call me shrill, dumb, inexperienced, girly, uneducated - these folks will say anything to distract from or undercut the truth that working people are getting screwed, and giving people a fair shake means we must have a grown conversation about reigning in abuse of power.
Marco Foster@MarcoFoster_

AOC: “There’s a certain level of wealth and accumulation that is unearned. You can’t earn a billion dollars. You just can’t earn that. You can get market power, you can break rules, you can abuse labor laws, you can pay people less than what they’re worth, but you can’t earn that”

To those who believe that hallucinations / confabulations are evidence that we are approaching AI in a fundamentally flawed way: Try talking to a toddler. Ask them why the sun goes down every day. Ask them where their (imaginary) friend is and what they’re doing at the moment. Ask them where the food in the supermarket comes from. What you will find is that you get answers that are quite plausible sounding even when completely wrong. Moreover, the toddler will often be completely confident in their answer. They don’t seem to even consider the possibility of being wrong, or reasons behind their answer. Later in life confabulation is somewhat suppressed, but I think this is largely due to mental habits we absorb from our culture (i.e. imitation-learn). Expressing uncertainty and lack of knowledge, asking for or actively looking for evidence, questioning and judging the credibility of sources, using logic, probability and decision theory, etc. are all learned habits of mind. In other words, the anti-confabulation algorithms are implemented on top of the native prediction / imitation / RL engine, and the code for these algorithms is the data provided by our cultural environment.

Someone can certainly *make* a billion dollars. That’s not the same thing as earning. Growing fast and disrupting markets also often means chasing and wielding market power, political influence, and scale. Take Airbnb. They heavily lobby politicians against passing housing laws to protect working class residents because it’s bad for their business model. Airbnb could not exist at its current scale and size without the housing market destabilizations, displacements, and exploits that are supercharging the evictions of working people everywhere from Puerto Rico to Jackson Hole. Now young people are planning for a future where they will never be able to afford to own a home while others have 20 and live off renting it out to them at extortionate rates with zero protections. Yes, a tiny amount of people can make billions of dollars doing that. And millions of everyday Americans are bearing the cost.
Paul Graham@paulg

Sure you can earn a billion dollars. I've been teaching people how to do it for 20 years. The way you do it is to start a company that grows fast. You don't have to do anything bad to make a company grow fast. You just have to make something people want. paulgraham.com/ace.html

@Houseofyogi I don’t think you pay attention enough to results, instead of claims. Ever since Reagan, in the 80s, Republicans have only helped the very wealthy. Look what they did to income inequality. Reagan’s objective was to gut the middle class, and that’s what they did. @SenWarren

Spirit Airlines died tonight at the hands of the socialist crusader, Elizabeth Warren She must be so proud to add another casket to her achievements. Tonight at 3am, Spirit turns off the lights. 14,000 jobs gone. 30+ smaller airports lose service. JetBlue offered $3.8 BILLION in cash to buy Spirit in 2022. Shareholders, flight attendants union, literally everyone voted yes. The combined company would have held 9% of the US market against a Big 4 that already owned 80%. For anyone who understands numbers: 9% isn’t a monopoly against 80%. Warren said no. She wrote letters. She pressured Buttigieg. Biden’s DOJ sued. A federal judge killed the deal in January 2024. Her argument: the merger would cost consumers $1 billion a year. Now look at her collateral damage she dusts under the rug. 510 pilots gone in the months after. 1,800 flight attendants furloughed in December. 14,000 jobs in 2023. 7,500 last week. Zero tonight. And that’s just the people in Spirit uniforms. Catering goes. Fuel guys go. Baggage crews, gate agents, airport coffee shops, hotels and rental cars in 70 cities Spirit flew to. Every airline job carries 3 more on its back. 40,000 people out of work because of one woman’s moronic crusade against the market. And the math ain’t mathing. Spirit abandoned 90 routes during the death spiral. Fares on those routes are up 14% on average. Oakland to Newark: $135 to $288. Fort Myers to San Juan: $92 to $219. Kansas City to Newark up 66%. That’s reality. Not some BS number from a “study.” So @SenWarren tell me how this saves the consumer money? Cheap carriers in a market drop fares 21% across the board. Southwest did this in the 90s and saved Americans $68 BILLION over 20 years. Warren killed it. That’s what moronic politicians led by socialism do. Then with her own blind arrogance, she tweeted Spirit’s collapse is “a Biden win for flyers.” A win. 14,000 people are reading termination letters tonight. And she’s taking credit. This is socialism in 2026. A senator who’s never made payroll thinks she knows how to run a market better than the people who own and work in the company. She saved you a billion on imaginary paper. She cost you ten times that in real life. She didn’t protect consumers from anything. 14,000+ will go from working to welfare. She will make sure to blame billionaires, hardworking tax payers, AI, capitalism and whatever monster they will make up tomorrow hiding under your bed. Higher taxes. Fewer jobs. More expensive everything. She called it a win. I hope you enjoy winning.

@MrBzinn @XFreeze I’m not sure about in the context of this tweet, but the idea that “we create nothing, we simply discover what exists and assemble it.” is incorrect. What did Einstein re-assemble when he created the knowledge of general relativity?

Ah the pitfalls of discovery, and assembly. We create nothing, we simply discover what exists, and assemble it. There are those who will always seek to profit from the work of others. Sad really, when anyone's discoveries and ideas are warped by the desire of money. But it has happened before and will continue and to what end; a hundred years maybe for those who seek it.

Interesting how it works Elon puts up his own money, rounds up the absolute best AI talent on the planet, leverages every connection he has to secure serious resources, and launches OpenAI in 2015 as a pure non-profit explicitly created to develop AI for the benefit of humanity, with zero profit motive and open research Then the “team” decides they want the bag They push Elon out, take control, and quietly flip the entire thing into a for-profit machine All while preaching the same sanctimonious lines on repeat: “We’re still mission-driven!” “AI for the good of humanity!” “We’d never abandon our principles!” The ultimate betrayal: Elon got zero equity. Not a single share. He funded it. He built the foundation. He got nothing while they turned his non-profit into their personal cash cow This is the level of betrayal and hypocrisy we’re dealing with And for the record.... this lawsuit doesn’t put a single penny in Elon’s pocket. Any win goes straight back to the non-profit to restore the exact mission he founded
OpenAI Newsroom@OpenAINewsroom

We can't wait to make our case in court where both the truth and the law are on our side. This lawsuit has always been a baseless and jealous bid to derail a competitor. We'll also finally have the chance to question Mr. Musk under oath before a jury of Californians about this attempt to undermine our work to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity.

@N1CKR055 @ATabarrok Decreasing Cost of Goods Sold is a strategy to increase profits, but a company has to have “goods” to sell first. I don’t think he was denying that as a strategy, but I’m not a mind reader.

@N1CKR055 @ATabarrok He's stating that insurance premiums are a payment to transfer risk to the insurance provider (in this case - potential future medical bills). If they ONLY deny claims the value of the 'product' being sold essentially goes to zero and the model collapses.

@ATabarrok How does this make sense? Paying claims may avoid getting penalized for not meeting the the 80/85% medical loss ratio OR Paying claims may equal profit b/c the claim payment goes to an Insurer-owned hospital But paying claims definitely does NOT = selling burgers
