This admission by the University of Sydney came after damning evidence from the Australasian Union of Jewish Students.

Today’s Senate Inquiry has highlighted Jewish students are pulling back from attending university because they do not feel safe or welcome. This is a tragedy for all of us. Universities must be places where all students are welcome.

I welcome today’s apology by Mark Scott regarding antisemitism at Sydney University. As he admits, Sydney Uni has failed its Jewish students and staff. Vice Chancellor Scott has committed to do better and for @Sydney_Uni to do better. I expect him to deliver. @AUJS

The creation of a Special Envoy to Combat Antisemitism is an integral part of combatting antisemitism across Australia and on campus. We thank @joshburnsmp, @spenderallegra, @JulianLeeser and @zdaniel for advocating for the creation of this important role. 4/6

Since October 7th, universities across the country have become the epicentre of antisemitism in Australia. For the first half of the year, Jewish students have faced unprecedented fear, intimidation and harassment, undermining the safety of students and social cohesion. 3/6

AUJS welcomes the Australian government's decision to appoint Jillian Segal AO as Special Envoy to Combat Antisemitism. 1/6

Jillian's appointment could not come sooner for Jewish students. Before October 7th, AUJS was already warning universities about the rise in antisemitism on campus. 2/6

AUJS and five other Jewish communal bodies are appalled by the University of Sydney's agreement with extremists, compromising campus safety and incentivising further disruption. We have lost confidence in their ability to protect Jewish students.

We continue to explore all options to ensure the safety and wellbeing of students and staff at the University of Sydney and stand ready to provide support and assistance to Jewish students and staff at the University, as well as those who now wish to leave the University.
