I can only speak from my experiences in my own life though, growing up as a tennis player I didn't see many people that looked like ME and I feel like it's important to celebrate them. What the press release below means is that FDA will decide by 1/6/2027 whether to approve Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong's drug Anktiva for papillary bladder cancer. Circa 80% of bladder cancers are papillary.
FDA *doesn't* have to wait to 1/16/2027 to make its decision. Given compelling data, it should have priority review:
Anktiva was approved in 2024 for bladder cancer in situ.
Since 2024, patients who have bladder cancer in situ (CIS) who *also* have papillary bladder cancer quality for the drug.
Thus, FDA has had 2 yrs of real-world data, plus additional years of study data proving the drug is effective for papillary cancer, as well as CIS.
Unfortunately, patients with papillary bladder cancer but *not* CIS usually have been out of luck--unless they & their physicians are relentless & lucky in pleading w FDA for Anktiva.
60,000 to 70,000 people are diagnosed w papillary bladder cancer every year in the U.S.
Many of them have died; more will die because of FDA's slow-walking Anktiva.
Anktiva works on cancers differently from traditional chemo. It strengthens the body's natural killer cells & killer T cells to destroy cancers & viruses. Unlike traditional chemo, side effects are minimal.
As Anktiva is cancer- and virus-agnostic, it should work for most cancers & viruses.
FDA, it's time to do the right thing for these patients--sooner rather than later.
