I was on the Kitty Hawk in 79 when we were extended to the IO/NAS because of the hostage crisis, and relief, Ranger, hitting a tanker in the Mallacca Strait. In 74/75 I was on deployment in P-3B aircrew on detachment, first to Diego Garcia and then to Bandar Abbas before the Shah fell (later that same deployment Saigon fell). Imagine my surprise, but not really. The Iranians were freaky even then.

A ship called the local port authority requested permission to dock as they had run out of water. They were denied permission! Multiple ships are in the same condition, with stores, food and fuel running low. Ports are overwhelmed and security is such that they are refusing permission for ships to dock. USS Gerald R. Ford heading back to Crete after a fire reportedly wrecked part of the ship… 600+ sailors left without beds. Now they’re checking if it was set on purpose to dodge the extended deployment. Crew already got caught earlier clogging toilets for the same reason. Ship’s been out since June 2025… pushing record deployment time. Navy hasn’t confirmed anything yet.
