@theiaincameron That reminds me of Iceland and Greenland. Greenland is further north, south, east and west of Iceland.

The northernmost point is Point Barrow (also called Nuvuk in Inupiaq), a headland on Alaska’s Arctic coast where the Chukchi Sea meets the Beaufort Sea. Thank me later when this comes up in a pub quiz… /END

Remarkably, Alaska contains the easternmost, westernmost, and northernmost points of the United States. 1/n

@theiaincameron @AndrewCohill Have a little look at the Central Pangean Mountains and the international Appalachian Way. USA, Scotland and Morocco. I think this is a great fact, but I am quite peculiar.

So, it is remarkable that you can put a canoe in a small river in North Carolina, but end up in the Gulf of Mexico/America* at New Orleans, along one of the world's oldest rivers. /END Thanks to @AndrewCohill for the tip-off. * Don't blame me, I'm only following Google Maps.

What happens when an immovable object meets an irresistible force? Well, when faced with one of the world's oldest rivers, the irresistible force loses. Such is the case in the Appalachian Mountains, where not even moving tectonic plates could subdue an ancient watercourse. 1/n

@theiaincameron I imagine there will be some good depths in the top of the Bizzle and Hen Hole. Easterly to South easterly winds stripping one side and dumping it on the other. A trip awaits for me. I can’t imagine what the depths must be like on Corrie of Lochnagar.

@theiaincameron Isostatic rebound is apparently responsible for the small land spit the river cuts through..???…

The shortest river in the UK is the River Morar, on the west coast of Scotland. It is only about half-a-mile long, but quite large in terms of flow. It drains the UK's deepest, and third biggest loch by volume, Loch Morar. This loch holds a wee bit less water than Loch Lomond.

@Official_WXUK 7 miles from the coast and at 125m AOD in Northumberland, it would not be much better than for you southern folk. But on a plus, for us at least, we do see the odd 8-12 inch once every 5 years or so.

@Petagna Hi Marco, why does the jet stream not push the lows south east and over the Med? Sorry if this is to simplistic of a question.

The Met Office app isn’t looking *too* bad now. Reducing the amount of space at the top has made a significant different and the animations are very nice. Still needs a lot of work but I feel a lot more hopeful that it’ll get there and they ARE listening.

NEW MET OFFICE APP The Met are actively interested in hearing feedback. There are plans to fix the scrolling issues & location issues some people are having. They’ve also added a “weather warnings” bar to more easily access national warnings when outside of a warning area. I’m speaking to the team again on Wednesday to discuss the app and hopefully find out more about the future direction and plans. If you have anything you’d like to be fed back to the development team please let me know and I’ll make a note of it. Cheers 👍🏻

This is the Helston to Penzance road, I have never really seen anything like this amount of tree damage, (there are two sections of trees that are down, the worst is at around 30 seconds into the video) a video from the back of a moving car just doesn’t really show it properly.

@Wyefarm @DaveThroup @BlackM1710 So the aim is for malting quality and not food production? I don’t agree with most of what this government is proscribing but I struggle to support the movement - “No Farmers, No Food” when a lot of arable farmers around my way simply aim for malting standards. Enlighten me 🙏🏼

@BlackM1710 @DaveThroup Yes sorry, so we would budget on a yield of 5t/ha but expect to be closer to 7t/ha. At 4t/ha if it doesn't make the malting premium specification for beer we will have made a significant loss/ha on the crop

Our officers have been actively responding to an oil spill incident on the River Don near West Boldon. Our teams, with support from Northumbrian Water, are working to identify the source and reduce the impact. Absorbent booms and pads are in place, and investigations continue

One of the most evocative sights of the Highlands is seeing the ancient Scots pine trees’ ghost-like stumps emerging from the peat. Stumps like these have been carbon dated to around 4,000-5,000 years old. Back then, the climate was 1-2°C warmer than today and trees were able to colonise higher altitudes. Subsequent cooler and wetter conditions, as well as possible human impact, meant that these trees died off, fell, and were covered by peat for thousands of years. The pale and bleached relics we see emerging slowly from the bog remind us of what we used to have.
