@WalkableAustin I’ll never get over that mockup. Why does it show the underground parking above ground? 🤣

Mayor Pro Tem Chito Vela, III
What would Austin look and feel like if we could get the percentage of car free households up to 15%? There are huge public benefits to doing this. Less pollution, people walk more and interact w their neighborhood. Helps local and neighborhood businesses. Saves people money.
Mayor Pro Tem Chito Vela, III@chitoforatx

5% of Austin households don’t have a vehicle, the highest among Texas cities. Dallas at 1% and Houston at 2%.

@data_atx My understanding is that this was proposed in part as a potential mechanism for funding the PC priority extension through revenue generated by Dog's Head–associated TIRs. The Commission also discussed whether this approach could help accelerate delivery of the airport extension.

A massive interstate that runs through a large city in this country is temporarily closed for two months, and there’s no impact on traffic. The idea that every highway designed 80+ years ago must stay in its original form is such a fallacy.

Forcing people to commute on a bicycle instead of in a car is not the point of bike infrastructure. Forget about the commute. The point is to increase options for people to get around, especially for short trips. All ages, all abilities, all income levels... everyone should have the freedom to get around on a bicycle. What most of America has today is a transportation system that eliminates choice. For most people, cars are the only practical option even for short trips.
Jordan Weissmann@JHWeissmann

And the thing is, the bike people just have this totally unfalsifiable faith in their cause. If only a tiny minority of people are peddling to work, they'll argue it's simply because we haven't yet built out enough lanes. Bike lanes cannot fail, they can only be failed.

@data_atx I’m excited about this, but TxDOT really ought to be funding it.

Austin has built a ton in last two decades. We just don’t need to build a $10B light rail that no one will use.
Rahm McDaniel ⚡️@McRahm

@LoewyLawFirm @JackCraver As Jack points out, Americans have gotten are really bad at building infrastructure. Austin is uniquely bad. We need to build, but over two decades of service to the city I observed that our “leader class” benefits more from ongoing problems than from solving them.

@LoewyLawFirm @JackCraver There has not been a single successful high speed rail project completed in the US. Acela sort of comes close but it was also massively over budget.

I really hope many of the folks who have opposed denser housing in Central Austin for years but also bemoan the closing of beloved community schools think carefully about projects like this. Housing like this solves our enrollment crisis and enables a pathway to living in Central Austin for young families. More of this please!
Cedar@cedarbuild

Sneak peek at one of our upcoming projects in Austin, made possible by Austin's HOME initiative. 3 homes where there was once 1, each sized for younger families and folks who normally couldn't afford to live in Brentwood. And maybe most importantly... beautifully designed courtyards that bend around a few trees that have been there for over a hundred years.

@douglas60085630 Definitely agree that delivering these projects takes substantial effort. A bit different, but I was recently proud of Austin's new Wishbone Bridge which completed our 10-mile trail loop along the waterfront. It's been immensely popular & features a central plaza for gatherings.

@douglas60085630 It’s also about more than looks, but the behaviors that this environment welcomes. People spending their Saturday evening outside surrounded by their neighbors in walking distance to restaurants, shops, museums, etc.
