A hugely underrated aspect of the Dune universe's appeal is how Frank Herbert built a world where people zip around the galaxy in spaceships but then fight each other with swords and knives. It makes everything 50 percent cooler than a world of ray guns and robots.

@MuseZack That’s an excellent point. All the houses are jockeying for advantage, but they all live on lush rich worlds. Except for whoever is on Arrakis. The Harkonnens never saw the potential. The Atreides saw it immediately and acted.

Herbert's "slow blade penetrates the shield" hand wave didn't just give his world cooler fights and battles. It was the underpinning of Dune's whole "space feudalism" system because it meant the force with the most skilled warrior caste wins.
