Heart Breaking Love Story of Afsar Khan Afsar was a peaceful young man. Afsar enters an illicit relationship with his Mami and allegedly murders his Mama. He was arrested, convicted, and served a prison sentence for the murder of his Mama. Upon his release, Afsar fell in deep love with his cousin Saima and forcibly married her, despite intense opposition from their families. Poor Afsar had no regular work. Long-standing tensions over financial stress and Afsar’s aggressive behavior reach a breaking point. Family members organize a formal meeting (panchayat) to mediate the disputes and resolve the domestic crisis. During the meeting, Afsar pulls a knife. He kills his brother-in-law (Adil) and his mother-in-law (Asma) on the spot. Afsar’s wife, Saima, is stabbed multiple times during the struggle. She is rushed to the hospital and admitted to the ICU in critical condition. Afsar flees the scene immediately following the k!llings, prompting an intensive police manhunt. We stated that a very unfortunate incident has happened. Now, what is the incident? The incident is that a person who got discharged from the CBI court, good for him, when the CBI challenged the case in the High Court and certain interim directions were passed by the High Court, he said, ‘No, no, no, I don’t like those interim directions.’ So he neither appealed against that order nor filed a review or revision, but he said, ‘Change the judge, change the bench, change the court.’ And he came out openly in public about it. It was all over the media that he was saying that this judge should not hear my case and some other judge should hear my case. Now, litigants cannot decide which judge will hear their case. It is the Chief Justice of the respective High Court who decides the roster, which judge will hear civil matters and which judge will hear criminal matters. Now here he says, ‘No, no, you change the judge.’ So the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court says, ‘No, there is no reason to change the judge. We are not changing the judge.’ He goes to the Supreme Court and files a petition saying, ‘Change the judge.’ Now you see, this is a very, very dangerous trend, not only for the judicial system but for our democracy. Now here, if you don’t like the order, you’re not challenging the order, you’re challenging the judge. And that too, you’re publicly humiliating and embarrassing the judge, that is wrong. So the number of people who have signed this letter, they are former and present vice-chancellors, IPS officers, lawyers, senior advocates, bar members, the High Court Bar Association’s former president, secretary, everybody has signed this letter saying this is a wrong precedent. It undermines the status, it undermines the dignity of the judiciary. Judicial officers should be allowed to work without any political pressure, without any pressure tactics. This amounts to forum shopping and bench hunting. This should be discouraged, and this is criminal contempt of court because you are attributing motives to the judge. So we have requested the Chief Justice of India to suo motu initiate criminal contempt proceedings against this person."

I have seen the clip, and I have watched the film many times. I enjoy its songs. I prefer not to go into their meaning, since that is a matter of opinion. Historically and culturally, music has always had diverse functions: ritual, devotion, entertainment, protest, and healing. For me, music is primarily for enjoyment. People experience music differently: some use it for devotion, some for propaganda, and others, for me, for enjoyment, relaxation, and stress relief. Of course, I do not deny your point of view.

Melodious. Excellent. Music knows no boundaries: geographic, cultural, or any other physical categories. When I was about 10 or 11 years old (1969–70), we had a radio at home. We loved listening to the film songs of Ghantasala, Susheela, and Leela. Whenever devotional keerthanas were broadcast, we would switch off the radio. Yet, in one house nearby, an old man always listened to the keerthanas of Tyagaraja and Annamacharya, which are part of our classical music. At that time, we were annoyed with him. Over the past 20 to 25 years, however, I have developed a deep interest in this music and now enjoy listening to it. I like all kinds of music, including Western, Indian film, folk, and Indian classical. I may not know music technically, but I certainly know how to enjoy it.
