Two months ago, when Oil was at $105-110, I published a report arguing that oil prices were heading much lower. What happened? Oil fell to $67-70. Then Trump wanted a little more drama. Hormuz is mostly closed. Yesterday I said oil was going lower. Today, oil is lower. Do I know something everyone else doesn't? Probably not. Ijust understand supply and demand. There simply is not enough demand to justify $100+ oil.

Where classical Zaydi doctrine has been taken to restrict eligibility for the imamate to a qualified descendant of al-Hasan or al-Husayn, it plainly did not restrict it to the al-Houthi family, much less to members of a political movement that arose only in the late twentieth century (Brandt, 2017; Mohammed, 2020). Nor are sāda or Ahl al-Bayt synonymous with “Houthis”: as Nevola’s ethnographic work demonstrates particularly well, Hashemite descent constitutes an older and much broader social-genealogical category whose members could become Houthi partisans, remain outside the movement, or oppose it, making Hamdi’s equation of “Houthi” with “Ahl al-Bayt” historically and sociologically untenable (Nevola, 2020). Ansar Allah’s 2012 “Intellectual and Cultural Document” does affirm a privileged and continuing role for Ahl al-Bayt as divinely designated guides of the Muslim community, so it would be equally inaccurate to pretend that lineage and wilāya are absent from the movement’s political theology; but this claim concerns religious guidance and authority, which is distinct from the much stronger proposition Hamdi attributes to the movement—that only a “Houthi” may govern the Yemeni state. Even scholarship critical of AnsarAllah admits that the movement has never formally proclaimed restoration of the pre-1962 imamate (see Albloshi, 2016; Mohammed, 2020). Nowhere in Hussein al-Houthi’s surviving lectures (re: Zaydi revivalism, Qurʾanic guidance, resistance to unjust rulers, anti-imperialism, and the political activation of Shiʿi identity) is there a constitutional theory stipulating that Yemen’s head of state must bear the surname al-Houthi, as Mr. Hamdi repeatedly insists (see: Albloshi, 2016). In fact, Brandt’s (critical/by no means sympathetic) reconstruction of the movement, which analyses its emergence in the post-1962 transformations of Saʿdah, admits that the movement does not seek to stipulate hereditary Houthi rule (Brandt, 2017). More importantly, Ansar Allah participated in the National Dialogue process and signed the September 2014 Peace and National Partnership Agreement, whose foundational language commits its signatories to a “federal democratic Yemeni state” grounded in the rule of law, equal citizenship, human rights, good governance, and, most critically for this topic, broad political participation. Its 2016 governing arrangement formally divided seats in the Supreme Political Council and National Salvation Government between Ansar Allah and the General People’s Congress (see: Peace and National Partnership Agreement, 2014; cf. Nevola & Shiban, 2020). Whatever argument detractors might want to make about political centralization around ʿAbd al-Malik al-Houthi (frankly these too are contestable, but political centralization is not equivalent to stipulating governance), Mr. Hamdi’s categorical claim of “Houthi-family exclusivity” is not supported by any of the extant scholarship or testimonies by the movement’s leadership. One can thus only conclude that he is working backwards from sectarian enmity, in which case he is not worth taking seriously, or is mired in ignorance, in which case he has a moral duty to educate himself (and, until he does, is again not to be taken seriously).

This, quite obviously, is someone trying to make arguments to fit a narrative. Here is the REALITY of Article 5: Iran followed the letter of the MOU exactly. They abided by the terms, and the United States (whose strategy is driven by Benham’s very think tank), sought to retroactively alter the terms and shift the leverages to their favor. Iran correctly shut that down. Now you can certainly whine about “international law” and “how dare they strike innocent civilians”… but there’s a problem with that. The United States has EXPLICITLY done the exact same things Iran is doing. We do not allow freedom of navigation with Cuba, and yet Iran is wrong for doing it in an ACTUAL existential war? Iran is wrong for striking vessels breaking their blockade? The U.S. has done the exact same thing! They’re monsters for killing civilian sailors? The United States has killed civilian sailors in this very war! Trying to take the “moral high ground” when the U.S. launched an illegal war of choice is preposterous. The reality of the MOU is that it call for “Iran to make arrangements”. They did. Along the Iranian route. It called for Iran to make “safe passage”. They did. Via the Iranian route were ZERO vessels were struck. It called for “no charges” to be imposed. No charges were imposed. It called for traffic to start immediately. Traffic DID start immediately. The REMAINDER of the MOU stated that Iran will conduct conversation with Gulf countries for the FUTURE administration of the Strait, and that ADMINISTRATION would need to be done in line with applicable international law. The reality of the matter is that people, and almost certainly Benham in PARTICULAR pushed for the Omani Route to be utilized in order for the United States to use the MOU window in order to shift the overall leverages in ways it was not at the time of signing. There’s a REASON the United States never released frozen assets to Iran under the MOU. It’s because they had zero intention whatsoever of seeing it through to the end. The Trump Administration, which is under significant and horribly flawed influence of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies violated the MOU by intentionally coercing vessels to utilize the Omani Route. You want to argue “that doesn’t mean Iran can shoot at them”? Read Article 1: “Undertake from now on not to initiate any war or any military operation against each other” The United States was conducting MILITARY operations against Iran by providing MILITARY air cover to vessels transiting to Omani Route. I’m sorry Benham (I’m not), you’re completely and obviously wrong, and FDD needs to be kicked to the curb entirely from the Iran War after advocating for failed strategy after failed strategy.

I have been briefed on today’s horrifying stabbings on the Upper West Side, where an Asian man and a Jewish man were attacked. According to witness and victim statements, the perpetrator yelled “Allahu Akbar” during both attacks. I am relieved that both victims are in stable condition. The NYPD responded immediately and arrested Raul Morales in connection with both assaults—and I am grateful to the officers for their swift response. The NYPD’s initial investigation suggests that mental health may have been a factor. They are also evaluating these stabbings as potential hate crimes. These hateful and despicable attacks have no place in our city.

Honestly, Mamdani and his PR team are incredibly savvy. They're doing exactly what they promised: rebuilding the people’s trust in government, but through perception first. Take the Israeli parade. First, he announces he'll be skipping it. That dominates headlines and reinforces the image of a mayor willing to take a bold stand, even at political risk. People who were skeptical start questioning their skepticism because the move feels authentic and principled. Then, after that positive perception takes hold, you get something like the video below. He still announces that he won't attend the parade himself, so he keeps the positive publicity. But at the same time, he says he'll send a member of his administration instead: Jessica Tisch, whom he chose to retain despite her family's well-known ties to Netanyahu. Most people won't notice the distinction. A small number like myself will criticize it, but by then the mass deception has already been established. The public focus shifts from scrutinizing the contradiction to defending the image of a "principled mayor." The net result is growing support, deeper belief in the system, and no political cost for it. This is the same pattern I saw with his pro-Palestinian messaging. "Free Palestine" goes viral, his supporters rally behind him, and his popularity grows. Then later, he starts saying in interviews that “Israel has a right to exist.” When I called it out and challenged him directly, the base had already been manipulated into a loyal following built around a radical image of him. Only months later did my criticism start to go mainstream, but by then the cycle had already reset and repeated itself. That's what makes the strategy so effective. The headline-grabbing position comes first. The nuance comes later. By the time people notice the difference, the public perception has already been set and he’s onto the next thing.
