@BeTraumaFree You and me both 🤣 Can be hard to shake even once I recognize it at times. Feel real dumb in those moments, hard not to indulge.

Nowadays when I get stuck in a rumination loop I can recognize it, name it and get myself out of it. A type of rumination I used to do was make up scenarios in my mind of an argument or conflict THAT NEVER HAPPENED and then I would feel upset about that made-up fantasy.

How can a psychiatrist be an expert in the patient's history when the patient remembers what happened and what was stated?

@Careerflex2 @johnhawkinsrwn Not even, technically, peasants had family property of which the head of the family had trusteeship. Peasantry required more of a sense of obligation than this. Its less than peasant mentality.

Kick Your Kids Out of the House at 18 There was never a question that I would be leaving home at 18. My parents did help me with college, and I came home on the weekends a lot my freshman year, but much less so as time went on. When I got out of college, moving home wasn't an option. My parents didn't want me there, and I would have been ashamed to mooch off them. Instead, I got a crap job, got roommates, and started making it on my own while driving a barely functional car my parents got me in high school. Did I visit? Did I ask for advice? Did I get some help from my parents here and there? Absolutely. But you're not really an adult living your own life until you're out of your parents' house. "Oh, but it's tougher today...." No, it's not. Early on, my jobs sucked. I always had roommates. I had very little money. It was not fun, but I sucked it up and made it work. That doesn't make me exceptional; it just means I was doing what an adult was expected to do. One way or the other, kids shouldn't be staying with their parents through their mid-twenties. They need to get out on their own, make their own way, and forge their own identity as something other than Mama and Daddy's little boy or girl.

Nearly half of Americans under 30 are living with their parents. About 49% of U.S. adults under 30 now live with at least one parent, according to new data cited by The Wall Street Journal from the Federal Reserve. (via @WSJ )

@Tom_Selleck I pulled a couple of ideas from 12-steps but most of the program didn't fit my worldview. Today many choices are available online, even if not in your local community.

I recognize that faith and/or the 12-step approach works for many in #addiction recovery. And I certainly support them in this. But it doesn't work for many others. The problem arises when we go from "this worked for me" to "this is the only thing that will work for everyone."

@cubbi10284 Memory is flawed, recreated over time. So the patient is just as biased and inaccurate as the psychiatrist. People who call themselves experts are suspect

I’m a bit averse to the whole “flown out” or “he paid for my uber” thing because why do I have to be the one in transit. Why am I the burrito in the doordash car showing up at your doorstep? Nah I’d rather not

@Careerflex2 From my POV, if I have to push to get them to understand or to care, they’re not worthy of access to it.

A big flex on the healing/trauma recovery story is not needing people, especially those who crossed you, to understand. It’s about not casting pearls before swine.

@AlobhaPatrick @Careerflex2 Do you believe that death is the end? I find the fact that some young girls are raped and murdered before they're teenagers proof that death is not the end. There is no fucking way that an existence solely consisting of birth, rape, and murder is possible.

@AlobhaPatrick @FrankLeeSG Good thing I am a licensed general contractor and a licensed psychotherapist. I work for no one. I built what I want. But I answer to physics. There is no such thing as building a house that defies physics. It will fail. Is there an analogy there for the psyche?

@FrankLeeSG Between nature (fundamental drives and needs) and society, we all have to follow orders. There’s no such thing as complete freedom if you want social cohesion. Are you some postmodernist who believes all rules and norms are evil?
