Two stories are hiding inside the Roberts-Smith arrest. One: how power, patronage, and institutional inertia can insulate a man from accountability long after the facts are settled. Two: how journalists, judges, and investigators eventually refused to look away. Both stories matter. Both explain the moment we’re in.

Iran is requiring oil tankers passing through the strait to pay in yuan rather than dollars, a direct challenge to the petrodollar system that has underpinned American financial and geopolitical power since the 1970s. At least two vessels have already complied. The petrodollar is not just a currency arrangement. Since the 1974 deal between the US and Saudi Arabia, global oil has been priced in dollars, forcing every nation on earth to accumulate dollars just to keep the lights on and the trucks moving. That artificial demand is what allowed Washington to print money, run deficits, and project military power no other country could afford. Oil was not just energy. It was the mechanism by which the dollar became the operating system of the global economy. The US national debt crossed $39 trillion on March 18, just weeks into the war. Interest costs are now the fastest-growing line item in the federal budget, and the US has suffered credit downgrades from all three major rating agencies. The petrodollar was the invisible subsidy that made those numbers survivable. Without it, they are not. Billionaire investor Ray Dalio drew a direct parallel to Britain’s 1956 Suez Crisis, which marked the end of the British Empire, warning that the US is now facing a similar test. The irony is sharp: the war launched to reassert American dominance in the Gulf may be the very event that ends it. China did not fire a single shot. Beijing has emerged as the alternative: Saudi Arabia’s largest trading partner, a provider of technology and weapons without conditions, and the architect of yuan-based currency swaps across the region. If Gulf states abandon the petrodollar, global dollar demand collapses. A weaker dollar means inflation, higher borrowing costs, and reduced geopolitical leverage. At the extreme, losing reserve currency status could force the US to consume less than it produces, a structural adjustment that would be deeply painful. The war meant to protect the petrodollar may be the thing that finally cracks it. Lindsey Graham says the US is going to make a ton of money. Beijing is counting on it. I want to know, and I suspect others want to know. There needs to be public debate on how we should address our national fuel security. #FOI #auspol

Must follow account for Australians. By these projections we are going to run out of diesel by May 19th. Think about what that means for the economy.
FuelAustralia.org@FuelAustralia

My live tracking confirms the diesel problem in real time. I'm independently monitoring 28 inbound fuel tankers from 9 open sources (port schedules, AIS satellite, fixture reports). The numbers: Diesel burns at ~92 ML/day. Petrol at 44. Jet at 25. Same diesel-skew you've identified — and it shows up starkly in the forward projection. With verified-only supply, diesel exhaustion is projected ~16 May. Petrol? Beyond 90 days. The diesel gap is the crisis. I've built a live model showing exactly this at fuelaustralia.org/reserves — toggle between "Verified" and "Est. Flow" to see the range of outcomes. Also a tool to look at some solutions... Would be interested in your take on the structural storage gap. Australia's 25-day reserve has been the norm for years — the crisis just exposed what was always there. Agree with your EV point. Mining, agriculture, trucking, and defence can't electrify overnight. 33,500 ML/year of diesel demand doesn't disappear with passenger EVs — you need green ammonia for shipping, e-fuels for aviation, and battery-electric haul trucks for mining (see the long-term vision page). fuelaustralia.org

~25 days of diesel is what's physically in the tanks. It's not a countdown to empty — fuel is still arriving. I'm tracking 29 inbound tankers right now, with arrivals through mid-May. The real timeline with deliveries factored in extends well past those dates. Worth noting: open-source tracking has roughly a 30-day visibility horizon — I can only see what's already at sea. Vessels departing Singapore or South Korea next week won't appear in my tracking for another 7-14 days. So the 28 I'm tracking is a floor, not a ceiling. You can toggle on estimated flow (not confirmed) on the fuelaustralia.org/reserves page to get a picture of what it will look like if we continue to get inbound tankers.

What is it with Hartcher and China? China is far (far) from perfect of course - but either are we or the US (dangerous basketcase) or the UK or Japan or Israel 😩 (the list goes on). Why exactly does he expect China to be so - with zero expectations for others 🤔 #auspol
Margaret Hollingdale@MargaretHollin1

Hartcher: 'America went to war against Iran And the winner is? China' “If you’re looking out at this from Beijing, what’s not to like about it?”poses Steve Biegun “The US is distracted. It’s depleting its military capabilities, at least in the short term” theage.com.au/world/asia/chi…

Trisha Hope - National Delegate-TX
He is insane. I am as MAGA as they get. I was a Front Row Joe, 42 rallies, walked the halls of congress 3 times for Trump, became a state delegate, then a national delegate ALL TO SUPPORT TRUMP. He has absolutely lost me, in fact I'm eyeing the 25th amendment for him because he's lost his damn mind.
Shadow of Ezra@ShadowofEzra

President Trump says he hasn’t lost a single supporter from his MAGA base, as CNN has confirmed in a poll that 100% of his supporters support everything he does. “MAGA loves what I’m doing.”

@deniseshrivell @AnneEdw45116023 I was interested to learn that home ownership in China is 95% And lots of people own two homes. One city apartment and one in a rural area. That might surprise many Australians, and bust a few myths about China.

@AnneEdw45116023 @deniseshrivell Yes, of all the things I saw in China this was the most incredible. Travelling 1600 across China (high speed rail) in six hours, hundreds of clusters of identical apartments rise from the fields.

@deniseshrivell Wow was my reaction too when travelling from the Airport into Shanghai 20 odd years ago & seeing kilometre after kilometre of high density apartment buildings as far as the eye could see. Crazy to think that Shanghai has roughly the same population as the whole of Australia.

Zeinab Al Saffar | زينب الصفّار
Israel escalates a scorched-earth campaign across occupied Syrian and Lebanese borderlands—this time through chemical warfare against nature itself. Under the pretext of “security,” Israeli forces are reportedly spraying high concentrations of herbicides over farmland and forests, systematically annihilating vegetation to strip the land bare and deny any form of life or cover. Independent analyses have detected glyphosate levels 20–30 times above normal, devastating crops, poisoning soil, and threatening civilian health and food security . This is not land management—it is ECOCIDE. A deliberate assault on ecosystems, agriculture, and livelihoods, designed to render entire areas uninhabitable and forcibly reshape the terrain through environmental destruction. The United Nations has already warned of “serious humanitarian risk” tied to such actions, raising alarms over long-term damage to civilian life and land viability . What is unfolding is a calculated strategy: erase the green, erase the entire population, erase the possibility of return. This is #GENOCIDE #Israel is the CRIMINAL.
