@GLabsPlus @Math_files But the question states, you met a woman that has a male child born on tuesday and another child; what are the odds the other child is a girl? You you got tunnel vision and only focused on the possibilities for that woman and didnt consider all of them women you could meet

@FishyComments @Math_files The chart considers all possible sequences of sex and day of the week, not all possible families. It also assumes that a birth on each day of the week is equally likely, and that a child being a boy or girl is also equally likely.

@GLabsPlus @Math_files The problem with your chart is that it assumes there are only one of each value, when there are 10s-100s of millions of mothers of 2 for each spot. You only have info on 1 of them. The odds are virtually 50/50

@Math_files The chart below may help explain things. It shows all 27 possibilities with a Tuesday boy in white, 14 of which include a girl. The two left most columns are the 1st kid, and the top two rows are the 2nd kid. Each white or Grey cell is a possible combination of 2 kids.

@Math_files Insufficient information. You have hidden assumptions in the question and the answer depends on how pedantic you want to be. Are we assuming even distribution on days of the week birth? Are we assuming male/female distribution is even (its not in real life)?

@GLabsPlus @Math_files There's more than 27 cases bc there's more than 1 woman in the world. Multiply the 28 total possibilities for a woman with 2 children (including the girl/girl pair) by about 4 billion & the chance that you ran into a woman with a boy/boy pair vs boy/girl pair is basically 50/50

Mathematician here. 51.85% is the right answer. There's 27 equally likely cases: 7 cases: Tuesday boy followed by a girl for each of the 7 days. 7 cases: A girl for each of the 7 days followed by Tuesday boy. 6 cases: Tuesday boy followed by a boy for each of the 6 days that aren't Tuesday. 6 cases: A boy for each of the 6 non-Tuesday day followed by Tuesday boy. 1 case: Tuesday boy followed by another Tuesday boy. 7+7+6+6+1=27 Of all 27 cases, 14 include a girl. 14/27 = 0.5185 = 51.85%

@LilithEdenDenom That’s according to the Ukrainian government. Russia is able to sufficiently evacuate its wounded because they are advancing more and Ukraine’s firepower is not as strong as Russia’s. Their true KIA will be 40% of total casualties at a maximum

@Empty_America Nearly half of the students that get into Harvard are not admitted by merit, they are children of alumni, staff, sports, oe dean's interest (their parents donated enough money). The people on that list are overwhelmingly Caucasian, so my guess is Harvard would be more diverse

If Harvard admitted students strictly by SAT score, filling slots in descending order starting at 1600, what would be the lowest SAT score admitted to the school? And what would be the resulting demographics of the student body?

@scottphorton @armani174174 @AGJamesUthmeier If that was your point, it was made in the wrong thread. We were discussing the Rooney rule and whether or not its unlawful, and your post could be read as an endorsement of OPs claim. I get that is your job and youd like to discuss the finer points of it, but wrong time/place

My original point was that it’s not clearly illegal. But minor details and semantics are critical in most employment discrimination cases. There is seldom a smoking gun proving discrimination. As an attorney that represents employers, I would generally advise against saying they “prefer to hire minorities” or encouraging managers “to hire more minorities.” Saying “we value diversity” and taking measures to ensure minority representation in the applicant pool along with removing bias against historically disadvantaged groups is the better framing and safer approach.

Professional sports are a visible example of a merit-based system, but through the Rooney Rule, the NFL requires its teams to use race-based hiring practices. We are putting Commissioner Roger Goodell on notice: the Rooney Rule violates Florida law, and it must stop.

@scottphorton @armani174174 @AGJamesUthmeier This isnt being pedantic, it goes to the heart of the Rooney rule. The NFL would prefer there to be more minority coaches and has put policies in place to encourage that. And that is legal, is it not?

@scottphorton @armani174174 @AGJamesUthmeier "could be used as evidence" that means in and of itself its legal, and you would need some other bad act, right? That statement by itself is legal, correct? In other words, as I stated, a company can LEGALLY say they PREFER to hire minorities, true or false?

@scottphorton @armani174174 @AGJamesUthmeier To be clear, im not, and never have, stating that the hiring decision can be based on a protected class. If you look back at all of my statements its that an employer can freely admit they'd prefer to hire women, minorities, etc. I dont see how you can dispute that...

@FishyComments @armani174174 @AGJamesUthmeier Employers can give hiring preference to veterans or people with disabilities. They cannot give hiring preference based on sex, race, national origin, and most other protected characteristics.

@scottphorton @armani174174 @AGJamesUthmeier We are going off on a tangent - what I stated is true & legal- BUT happy to jump on that tangent. Are you claiming that an employer stating they hire for diversity or give preference for veterans would be "devastating evidence" in a discrimination claim??? Or did I misunderstand?

@FishyComments @armani174174 @AGJamesUthmeier Legally risky in the sense that it would be devastating evidence against the employer if someone claims discrimination. Whether something is technically legal or not rarely matters in isolation.

@scottphorton @armani174174 @AGJamesUthmeier Legally risky if they then did something illegal... thats pretty much how everything works isnt it counselor? On its face, its legal and its certainly not unconstitutional as OP stated.

@FishyComments @armani174174 @AGJamesUthmeier That would be legally risky. It would become clearly illegal if the manager feels they have two equally qualified candidates and picks the woman over the man based on gender; or if the manager only considers female applicants.

@scottphorton @armani174174 @AGJamesUthmeier Put it this way, are you saying it would be illegal for an employer to say "we want to hire more minorities and more women and are encouraging our managers to do so"? Cause if thats legal, how is that any different from what im saying and the Rooney rule in general?

@scottphorton @armani174174 @AGJamesUthmeier Im in the US. The CIO was from the UK, thats what caused the problems. You certainly can give preferential hiring to protected classes. You can even age discriminate as long as its not against someone 40 or over. Employment law isnt what most people think

@scottphorton @armani174174 @AGJamesUthmeier Had a new female CIO based in the UK come in & on a conference call told us to "start hiring younger and female." Soom after we got a class from the companies lawyers on what we can hire preferentially for - younger is a big no no, but you can preferably hire those o mentioned
