We need a sensible debate on nuclear power in Scotland. Should we prioritise nuclear at the expense of renewables? No, but nobody is really arguing that.
Should it be part of our future energy mix? Yes, in my view. But only if it’s delivered cost-effectively.

Scottish anti-nuclear campaigners have claimed new polling (funded by them) shows Scots oppose nuclear. This apparently conflicts with a number of other polls (not funded by them) that show nuclear is popular and most scots oppose the ban. Let's compare the questions asked. Britain Remade, where I work, commissioned some. This is one question we asked. "Thinking of nuclear power, which of the following statements comes closest to your view of Scotland’s clean energy mix? By “clean energy mix” we mean the combination of future clean energy sources Scotland uses to generate electricity." We gave three options: - Scotland should include new nuclear power sources into its clean energy mix - Scotland should exclude new nuclear power from its clean energy mix - Don't know Other questions we asked: "To successfully reach the target of net zero by 2045, do you think Scotland needs to include nuclear power as part of its clean energy mix?" "It has been a long-standing Scottish government and SNP policy to oppose the construction of new sources of nuclear power in Scotland. This constitutes an effective ban on the technology because planning proposals are highly unlikely to be approved while this policy remains in place. Would you say you support or oppose this effective ban on new nuclear power in Scotland?" On the first question, 51% answered 'include' vs 17% for 'exclude'. On the last, 36% opposed the SNP policy vs 29% in favour. (Unsurprisingly, calling it an SNP policy meant SNP voters were more likely to support it even if it conflicted with their earlier answer.) Oh, and a plurality (48% to 37%) of SNP voters thought SMRs should be allowed to be built. What about the anti-nuclear polling from "Green Power International" from a renewable firm opposed to nuclear power? "Which one of the following energy sources do you think Scotland should focus on to make the most effective contribution to tackling climate change, if any?" "Which industry do you trust the most to tell you the truth about their products? This may include their costs, the pollutants they might produce, or their safety record." "Which form of energy do you think is most likely to reduce energy bills, if any?" The problem is obvious. Instead of asking whether they'd like nuclear as part of their clean energy mix, Green Power International make it all or nothing. 100% Renewables or 100% Nuclear, there's no option for an energy mix. The question is essentially meaningless. The debate over nuclear in Scotland is over whether it remains a small, but significant, part of the mix. So do Scots support or oppose nuclear power?
