@FakePearBear @_Meavina_ The PS2 actually sold like shit when it came out in 2000. At the end of FY2000 (end of March 2001) it had only sold 1.1 million units despite coming out the previous March in Japan and October in the US. For comparison the N64 sold 6 million units in FY2000.

I don't necessarily agree with the notion that a new generation MUST outsell the previous one or it is a "failure". 100 million units is a LOT of hardware to sell. Only the best systems of all time have ever done it. Every PlayStation except for the PS3 has done it. Despite not reaching 160M like the PS2 did, that is a MASSIVE success and I'm sure it's a goal-marker at Sony. Also : Even as someone who considers PS2 the greatest console ever made, a LOT of its success in early sales around year 2000 was due to the fact that it was the cheapest DVD player in the world by a LONGSHOT. People saw insane value in having a game console mixed with a DVD player.

Another one. If the Switch 2 doesn’t outsell the Switch 1, then it’s a failure. PlayStation is on number 5 and they yet to outsell the PS2

Nintendo simply way overshot their estimation. Apparently they planned for 6 million units per quarter now reduced to 4 million. 6 million per quarter is insane. That 24 million per fiscal year and that's not including the holiday surge. 16M per FY is more reasonable.

The problem with saying Switch 2 sales aren't meeting Nintendo's expectations is that Nintendo's expectations are often impossibly high. I remember many times we would get excited that we set a sales record and then turn around and be told we failed to meet our goal.
