@WardRadioShow @Lew541207 This is one of the many reasons that I’m grateful every day that missionaries knocked on my parent’s door in the 70s.

Youth sports were introduced in the attempt to prevent war. Let me explain. I'm a former Division I athlete and former head basketball coach for a large high school. I'm not a novice on this topic. Youth sports can teach kids all the life lessons of war without your child having to lose his/her life. They can experience loss, success, adversity, brotherhood/sisterhood, humility, grit, etc. BUT (and its a very big BUT) If the coaches AND PARENTS do not emphasize the lessons and the whys of youth sports, it is an absolute waste of time and can actually harm your kids emotionally, intellectually, and socially. The very tool used to prevent war can be the very tool use to stoke a generation prone to violence and justification of such violence. We are losing our way. Behavior like this needs to be rooted out completely. The coach and player banned from youth sports in all 50 states. It HAS to be a zero tolerance policy across all youth competitions. Our kids and our nation literally depends on it.

I would absolutely get arrested if my kid was in that dugout 🤬🤬🤬

@JoshuaSheats It would have been miserable for me if I hadn’t raised my kids in a church community. We moved a lot and every time we did, we always had friends ready and waiting for us. #LDS

It’s brutally difficult to simply find children for your children to play with.
Meta Trav@Meta_Trav

Technology isn't the problem. The kids' peer group is. Where I lived before, there was literally nowhere to go and no kids to play with. No "lots of time outdoors" existed. But when you have that, when kids can run outside and find friends every single day, they don't touch screens. They just don't. I see this now. But here's what I also see. This peer group is fragile. It's literally 2 families within 2 streets keeping my kids busy. That's it. Two. If those families aren't around, the whole thing collapses instantly. We're back to zero. And it's not like the old days where families went to church together, where the adults actually knew each other and were aligned. The parents barely talk. We have a "wave to each other" relationship. Even worse, these families are completely bought into the running around lifestyle. My kids come home constantly with "So and so had to go to gymnastics." Peak play hours? Gone. Everyone's driving to activities. The whole street operates like this. School, then scattered to different locations for extracurriculars. This "lots of time outdoors" thing could fall apart any day. It's a math problem. And the math is actually terrible. The boomers have no idea how lucky they had it. A massive demographic explosion of same-aged families all concentrated in the exact same suburban developments. Close-knit houses but still tons of open space for kids to play. Church still binding everyone together. One parent working, one at home. It's actually insane how perfectly aligned everything was for them.

@LoudounResident @CaptMahonri Really hot water and a scoop of oxiclean. Let them soak. And agitate them every now and then. Rinse with really hot water and then wash them in the laundry. The water has to be hot to pull the oils out.

@darthcaro What you said about it being “in a big vacation area” is key. I had a friend who lived in an area that had a ton of visitors every summer and teachers can’t plan for that much uncertainty.

Hot take I don’t think you should just dump your kids (unless they’re very well behaved) on the primary of whatever ward you’re visiting on vacation—especially if it’s in a big vacation area—because it’s extremely stressful to the primary leaders and we can’t remember what everyone’s parents look like when there’s so many visitors. The simple solution is stay with your kid in primary to help out. Or be like me and don’t go to second hour on vacation lol.

@DanShaha I hear the temple is an OT relic. Why do I have weekly experiences there that show me God knows exactly where I am, where my temple workers are, and where the saints who visit are? Relics are without life and our temple isn’t.

I had an interaction with a critic of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints the other day that has fundamentally changed my views on the Church and the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ. After some back and forth about one of a dozen recycled anti-Mormon tropes he asked me a question; what evidence did I need to see to prove that Joseph Smith was false prophet and that the Church was founded on a lie? I had to pause and think about my answer. I don’t want to tie my testimony of the Restored Gospel to an event, person, or policy. That seems like an easy way to have my convictions undermined. But I also don’t want to come off as a zealot acting on blind faith, either. After thinking for a while I answered; I would need to have a significant spiritual experience equal to or greater than the experience I had when I first read The Book of Mormon, or the first time I went to the Temple, or when I got married, or when I first held my kids. I’d need an experience so significant that it would outweigh my previous experiences. The conversation ended there. My testimony of the Restored Gospel comes from God, as revealed through the Holy Ghost. God is the objective source of all truth. I may not have all the answers. Some of my beliefs may not make logical sense. But God has made it very clear to me that objective, eternal truth is found in the Restored Gospel and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

@jonathanplumb As a woman in her mid years, my hormones are already struggling. I am so grateful I didn’t contribute more to that struggle by consuming alcohol. All the leading menopause experts are warning women not to drink ANY alcohol at all because of its negative effects.

At least stacker provides an endless trove of teaching opportunities (because he’s categorically wrong about everything). The Word of Wisdom was NOT given to tell us things that are or aren’t healthy. Sure, there’s a bit of that in there — but D&C 89 is VERY CLEAR on why we have the WoW. Let’s take a look. First, verses 1–3 tell us it was given for the benefit of the Saints, “adapted to the capacity of the weak and the weakest of all saints, who are or can be called saints.” That’s an important thing to remember as we enter into verse 4, which tells us the real conundrum. For we are told: “In consequence of evils and designs which do and will exist in the hearts of conspiring men in the last days, I have warned you, and forewarn you, by giving unto you this word of wisdom by revelation—” So it has very little to actually do with staying healthy! In fact, if we read carefully, we see this is the case. Verses 5–7 tells us to avoid alcohol. Not because it’s bad for your health, but because “it is not good, neither meet in the sight of your Father, only in assembling yourselves together to offer up your sacraments before him.” In other words, the Lord doesn’t want a bunch of drunken clowns all around him. Alcohol is perfectly healthy when consumed properly. Though, verse 7 tells us its ACTUAL purpose is for washing and cleaning, not the belly. (It should be noted that we often use things for more purposes than solely what they were made for.) Now, the prohibition on tobacco in verse 8 is one of the few where we are actually told it is “not good for man.” But that still doesn’t mean the tobacco itself is bad — just that it was made for a different purpose, and is good if used for its purpose. Verses 9–11 are about hot drinks (which were later clarified to be tea and coffee). But it doesn’t say they are bad for man. It just says they weren’t made for the body or belly. And if used for the right purpose, they’re fine. For instance, herbal tea is good when used to treat health conditions, but is bad if consumed regularly. You’re welcome to go read the rest. In fact, I encourage it. You’ll see that aside from tobacco, nothing is actually declared bad for man entirely. So why are we forbidden from these things, if not for health reasons? Well, go back and read verse 4 again. It says it was given because of the “evils and designs” of conspiring men in the last days. What does that mean? Simple. These industries are built upon dependency. They market addiction as freedom. They package enslavement as sophistication. They normalize chemical dependency, then build entire economies around keeping you dependent upon the very thing that weakens your agency. Alcohol companies profit from broken homes. Tobacco companies profit from addiction. Modern caffeine culture profits from exhaustion, overwork, and a population chemically stimulated just to survive the machine built around them. And before people clutch pearls, no — that doesn’t mean every person who drinks coffee is evil. That completely misses the point. The point is SYSTEMS. The Lord warned us there would be “conspiring men” who would monetize appetite itself. Men who would engineer dependency, then market it back to the masses as culture, identity, freedom, adulthood, rebellion, success, relaxation, or self-care. The Word of Wisdom is ultimately about preserving agency in an age designed to enslave appetite. That is why it matters.
Stacker@stackerco

You should probably drink black coffee to follow the word of wisdom. Make it iced and then you’re safe. Helps your liver too.

I returned home from my mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in January 2006 and immediately went to BYU-Idaho to start college. After a year in Rexburg, I married my wife, dropped out of school, and moved to Fresno, CA for a job that never materialized. In late 2007 we were both working full time, living paycheck to paycheck and expecting our first daughter. I was stressed, trying to figure out how I was going to support my wife and child. I ended up in the US Army recruiting office after receiving some pretty specific guidance from The Lord. After a couple of months of hard work (I had to drop 40 pounds to join) I shipped to Basic Training at Fort Sill, OK in 2008, leaving my very pregnant wife at home. What followed was 10 weeks of intense training, limited phone calls, and the occasional letter. Once through Basic I went to Fort Bliss, TX for another 6 months for advanced training. During my time in Texas my oldest daughter was born. It was a difficult time in my life. Eventually I graduated, and moved to Fort Hood, where I started my military career. That was almost 20 years ago, and I will be retiring from the Army next year. Looking back, God was absolutely looking out for me and my family. He knew what we needed, and He provided a way for me to ensure that my wife and kids have been provided for, and has kept me safe and mostly healthy. I will always be thankful to have the Gospel of Jesus Christ in my life. It has been a foundation and a framework to build my life on. Everywhere I've been, the Church and the Gospel has been there. Everywhere I've been, there have been members ready and willing to help. And God has directed my military career, placing me and my family where we need to be exactly when we need to be there. It's been an amazing opportunity, and I'm looking forward to see what The Lord has in store for my future.
