Ashkenazi Jews do have European admixture — but it’s minor. Most major peer-reviewed genetic studies (e.g., Behar et al., Nature Communications, 2010) show that Ashkenazi Jews are overwhelmingly of Middle Eastern origin, with around 60-80% of our ancestry tracing back to the Levant. Our European component is real, but limited — often attributed to historic conversions or intermarriage during the diaspora, particularly maternal lineage (more on that below). Genetic clustering still places Ashkenazi Jews closest to other Middle Eastern Jewish populations, like Sephardi and Mizrahi Jews — not to Europeans. Studies like Need et al. (2009) and Atzmon et al. (2010, American Journal of Human Genetics) demonstrate that while Ashkenazi Jews are distinct, they cluster genetically between Middle Eastern populations and Southern Europeans — but notably closer to the former. The maternal lineage is more mixed, but the paternal lineage is overwhelmingly Middle Eastern. Y-DNA (paternal) studies show that Ashkenazi men share common ancestry with other Jewish and Middle Eastern populations. The mtDNA (maternal) line has more European influence — which tracks historically, since Jewish men often settled in Europe and married local women who converted.
