@lrozen Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. This is really not hard to understand. I dislike almost all of Trump’s policies but the Iran threat was and is totally unacceptable

@lrozen Does Grossi also not understand the issues? The science is clear. Iran was 7-10 days away from making a nuclear weapon is they wanted to do it. That is what was determined to be an unacceptable risk
Tom Bateman@tombateman

I asked Rafael Grossi the IAEA head about the Trump administration claim that Iran could enrich weapons-grade uranium for multiple bombs within 7 to 10 days. Hypothetically possible he said but no “tangible evidence about a systematic program”

Quite apparent listening to Witkoff interviews in weeks since that he did not understand Iran nuclear issues and was obsessed with the wrong things and he and Kushner needed an expert on their team
Laura Rozen@lrozen

Araghchi trying to explain nuclear fuel production to Witkoff and Kushner at talks in Oman in February, because the US negotiators did not bring technical experts: Amwaj report: amwaj.media/en/article/ins… “Informed Iranian political sources familiar with the talks additionally highlighted that the lack of nuclear expertise on the part of Kushner and Witkoff, in addition to the absence of a technical team, caused consternation in the negotiations. According to the senior source, “Araghchi on several occasions explained the stages of nuclear fuel production and the difference between an enrichment facility and a reactor to Witkoff, yet the US negotiator still believed that the Tehran Research Reactor was an enrichment facility producing radio-medicines.”

It’s really quite sad. I am not against military action against Iran but it is extremely sad and unfortunate that the Trump admin has cast aside its dearest allies. Hopefully when Trump leaves the wounds can begin to mend because the rational amongst us realize we are natural allies

@lrozen @KimGhattas He also was basically running the negotiations (aragachi would report to him) and Iran showed zero willingness to make meaningful concessions. Also not very pragmatic

@lrozen @KimGhattas “Pragmatic”… he was a key part of the massacre of 30,000-40,000 protesters earlier this year. That doesn’t seem pragmatic to me….

FT: “Regional officials say there is no movement on diplomatic efforts to end the war from either side. And Israel’s killing on Tuesday of Ali Larijani, a conservative but pragmatic regime veteran, is expected to further set back hopes of a resumption of talks. He would have been integral to any diplomatic process, a regional diplomat said. The diplomat said he expected Iran would stop its attacks on US targets if Trump withdrew from the conflict, enabling Tehran to claim it had forced America’s retreat.” giftarticle.ft.com/giftarticle/ac…

@sfrantzman What’s the overall vibe there? Obviously no one wants war but do people still have a positive attitude on this as just something they have to deal with or…?

We’ve had several sirens in Jerusalem over the last two hours, and I had to drive though a few of them; and I see these guys working on the electric pylons for the light rail at night, also dealing with the sirens and alerts every 20 min or so

@lrozen @mehdirhasan So the distinction is they weren’t days away from having a nuke but they could be days away from having a nuke whenever they make that decision. That’s clearly what the US intel says and people are tripping up on specific language used

@MallamarCat @Kama_Kamilia Got some interesting speculation online that its a laser guided AA o algo. My curiosity lies in this fucked up FLIR heat mapping before and after where its clear LO. Do these optics just adjust heat mapping by hottest source??

I would say if the regime is still in place and they maintain the capability to close the Strait of Hormuz and cripple the world economy with strikes on Gulf energy infrastructure one could argue the regime will be emboldened. They will be even tougher to deal with as they know an air campaign against them won’t take this ability away and a large ground force is politically impossible from its adversaries

Sorry, but in what world does #Iran come out from this campaign "strengthened"? Yes, the regime is not falling, but strengthened? Most of its military advanced capabilities hurt, its economy in shambles, many top leaders gone, a population that is mostly against it, how is this strengthened?

@ariel_oseran Ugh….. that doesn’t seem like a strike where the jet could return to a ME base and land safely. I’m skeptical

The IRGC released footage claiming to show the moment its air defenses hit a U.S. F-35 fighter jet over central Iran today at dawn. Earlier, CNN confirmed that an F-35 jet made an emergency landing at a U.S. air base in the Middle East after it was struck by what is believed to be Iranian fire.

Trumps Greenland policy was/is the most bizarre thing. Everyone gets why Greenland is important to American defense (as well as the entire west) but I never once heard a decent explanation for the need to take it over. Ukraine, Greenland, Iran…. Three crisis points that have likely broken NATO permanently
