@M_C_Klein @AdamPosen At every presser since July, Powell has said services inflation was coming down (until today)

@greg_ip @IrvingSwisher @NickTimiraos A flip from Jan presser when he said core services was continuing to disinflate and also said that all components of core services were easing.

. @NickTimiraos stumps Powell. Why hasn't non-housing services inflation moved down, esp without tight labor market? "Good question...frustrating ... bunch of idiosyncratic things...One of the things we should be seeing ... it's a good question ... "

@NickTimiraos @jasonfurman I’ve long thought we need an Economic Supreme Court that without partisanship studies key issues like how to end poverty or rescue the housing market. Fed economists are muffled and the country stumbles around in the dark. I remember the gold standard debate, the Mmt debate

He’s essentially suggesting the Fed self-censor its research to avoid topics the White House considers politically sensitive. Does that preserve the independence or undermine it? True independence means conducting rigorous analysis on topics relating to prices, employment, financial stability etc., regardless of whether the findings are convenient for the sitting administration. The White House hasn’t had a problem touting tariff research from other Fed economists when it approves of the findings.

Better tone but substance still bad: “The Federal Reserve itself needs to have a policy where the extreme gravitas of the Fed should be used to talk about monetary policy and not to go willy nilly into every political topic if they want to preserve their political independence.”
Aaron Rupar@atrupar

VARNEY: You said the economists behind a NY Fed study that said 86% of tariff burdens falls on American businesses and consumers should be disciplined. What's your issue? HASSETT: Yeah, you know, I probably got a little emotional when I said that and I regret if the people who wrote the study feel like I personally attacked them. That was not my intent.

Shirley Povich from 1962, with the most immaculate burn ever on the Redskins vile owner George Preston Marshall, the last NFL owner to insist on an all white roster: "Jim Brown, born ineligible to play for the Redskins, integrated their end zone three times yesterday." RIP WaPo.

By analyzing $4 trillion of shipments between January 2024 and November 2025, researchers found that foreign exporters absorbed only about 4% of the burden of last year’s U.S. tariff increases by lowering their prices, while American consumers and importers absorbed 96%. The tariffs had a significant effect on trade volumes: Facing higher U.S. tariffs, Indian exporters maintained their prices but reduced the volume of shipments to the U.S. by 18%-24% relative to the European Union, Canada and Australia, the report found. Rather than acting as a tax on foreign producers, the tariffs functioned as a consumption tax on Americans. The $200 billion in additional U.S. tariff revenue last year “was paid almost exclusively by Americans.” wsj.com/economy/trade/…

@iamstilljess People forget that the whole town was in the dumps ahead of the first playoff game against Atlanta. My cab driver from 30th street that morning sneered at me wh I said we’d win… it did come down to last play
