@dccommonsense perhaps we would. instead of trying to attack the goliath directly. who will the non-belligerent countries blame when they start getting destabilized?

@hotcspan The way to look at it is to imagine that our roles were reversed and then try to see if you can determine how we would act in Iran's situation. Would we use our geographic positioning as a weapon against a technologically overwhelmingly superior opponent?

This is a really good analysis.

I write in @FT that Iran is playing the long game. In war, geography matters as much as technology. Iran commands the entire northern shore of the Gulf, looming large over energy fields on its southern shore and all that passes through its waters. Its Houthi allies are perched at the entrance to the Red Sea and along the passage to the Suez Canal; Iran is thus perfectly positioned to squeeze the global economy from both sides of the Arabian Peninsula. Those in command of Iran today are veterans of asymmetric wars in Iraq and Syria. They are now applying the same strategy to fighting the US on the battlefield of the global economy. Drones, short-range missiles and mines setting tankers and ports on fire can have the same effect IEDs had in Iraq, only with greater impact — disrupting global supply chains and sending oil prices higher. Iran could sustain its counteroffensive more easily and for far longer. Furthermore, a ceasefire alone will not lift the shadow of risk that Iran has imposed over the Gulf, which is now experiencing its nightmare scenario. That is why Iranian leaders are saying they will not accept a ceasefire until Washington fully grasps the global economic cost of waging this war. Businesses, investors and tourists may not return to the Gulf states if they assume that war could resume again. Unless the US is prepared to invade Iran to remove the Islamic republic’s leaders and then stay there to ensure stability and security, confidence in the Gulf will only return if the US and Iran arrive at a durable ceasefire. Iran says it will only accept a ceasefire with international guarantees for its sovereignty, which would probably mean a direct role for Russia and China. It may also demand compensation for war damages and a verifiable ceasefire in Lebanon. The US would then have to agree to some form of the nuclear deal it left on the table in Geneva in February and commit to lifting sanctions. Iran’s leaders entered this war with the goal of ensuring it will be the last one. Either it breaks them or radically changes the country’s circumstances. They are betting on surviving long enough and squeezing the global economy hard enough to realise that goal. Read full article ft.com/content/93b7b6…

I can’t believe that a man known as “the prince of darkness” from the early 1990s onwards has turned out to be a venal, self serving scumbag, intimately connected to an international ring of sex traffickers and paedophiles - it’s always the ones you least expect …

Here's the trailer for the film, in case anyone besides Meghan McCain actually thinks that Mr. Rogers -- unlike Ms. Rachel -- was apolitical. He was at least as political as she is. I'd say for more so. This film is exceptionally good:

LOL. Holy shit. Mr. Rogers was extremely political -- subversively and radically so. There's a great, widely watched documentary on Mr. Rogers that focuses on precisely this fact. What this tweet claims is the completely opposite of reality. Watch "Won't You Be My Neighbor?"

In 2022, the Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies announced that they would fund research to determine whether humanity is facing an extinction-level event. They never followed up with an official answer, but the billionaire and owner of the institute, Robert Bigelow, revealed the answer in a 2024 interview This is a gigantic problem, it's going to happen, and there's nothing we can do about it!" The 'elite' will have more information than the average person on the street. Things are really going to get bad, so how do you prepare for any of that? The best part is when he says, 'People will not believe it anyway.' And he’s right, people always choose to ignore the hard truth. But not the 'elites'; they’ve been preparing since the early 2000s.

"With his leather jacket and late ’60s mop top, @JMilei is part–rock star, part–mad professor, dancing, singing, and screaming his catch phrase: ¡Viva la libertad, carajo!—'Long live liberty, damn it!' It’s as if Joe Cocker had gone onstage at Woodstock and sung 'I'll Get By with a Little Help from My Friedman.' Never in the history of democracy has a tribune of the people won power this way." 4/5

"These are astonishing feats. And they have ramifications that go far beyond South America. Free-market economics and political libertarianism are sometimes dismissed as a fad of the 'neoliberal' 1980s, long ago superseded by the new populisms of the left and the right. Not so. The world has never seen a government more radically libertarian than @JMilei. But the amazing thing is not that it is working economically. The true miracle is that Milei’s shock therapy is working politically." 3/5

@grinich @SlackHQ @Benioff Enshittification. @spotify did something similar last november when they locked devs out of the more useful parts of their API without warning. the parts that they got from EchoNest, which was a publicly funded project out of MIT media lab.

The new @SlackHQ API rate limits are absolutely insane: For accessing messages, you can now only make 1 request per minute, with a maximum of 15 messages 🤯 And yes this applies to ALL apps, not just public ones. We can't build internal tools on our OWN data. @Benioff this is wrong and hostile to your customers. Please reverse this immediately. If you are worried about abuse, just limit APIs for public apps. Companies must always have unlimited access to their own data in your products.

#OTD July 11, 1882, RI held a sale of lands of the Narragansett Nation. The sale was part of the State's (failed) attempt to detribalize & abolish the sovereign authority of the Narragansett people. All but 2 acres of land were sold. Today, the reservation is over 1.8k acres.
