Opioids cause dependence, tolerance, and ultimately because of those, an awful lot of overdose death. Journavx, the first non-opioid painkiller, may allow us to avoid an awful lot of this worksinprogress.news/p/the-first-no…

The approval of Journavx (suzetrigine) marks a major step in non-opioid pain management. Could this shift pain treatment strategies? Explore its potential impact: bit.ly/433EbqH #PainRelief #FDAApproval

The best thing might be to simply go to the other worlds ourselves (or send our robot proxies) to do gardening directly - spreading life, but also keeping it from turning too painful.

Our view is that a temporary moratorium on directed panspermia is a good idea. It is early days in space, time is cheap, we need to figure out more about the balance between suffering risk and value of life, or how to make life that tends to evolve to high wellbeing.

I'm completely serious in asking: What inspiring centuries-long project could unite the largest % of the world, so that their joint pursuit of it could unite them & give deep meaning to all their lives?

We only have three emojis (🔍⏸️🔸) to signal being part of the EA in-group. That's not nearly enough. What other emojis can we add?

@beffjezos I absolutely will! You have my word that my post from four months ago, including the focus on decentralized solutions, is an accurate description of what I value, and I plan to keep supporting valuable science along those lines.

Market fluctuations effectively caused an outsized donation to AI Doomerism org, effectively disrupting the balance. The only way to make this right is for V to donate a similar amount to a pro-acceleration org.

@NathanpmYoung @politico It's the same situation as with cryptorelief: I quickly sent a pile of SHIB, thinking it would surely drop 100x in a few days so I had to act fast, and expecting they would be able to cash out at most like $10-25m. But of course SHIB massively outperformed my expectations...

@MatthewJBar Dude, if we invested as much in longevity research as we're investing in AI, we'd get longevity much faster. AI is the path to extinction. Longevity research is the path to longevity. Important not to confuse them.

Altruistically, I'm uncertain whether faster AI progress is good on current margins. But selfishly I agree with Sheel: I feel great whenever a new AI model drops. It makes me feel like I'm finally getting closer to the awesome and wild future I've been waiting a long time for.

OoenAI released an awesome text to video model and the top 196 HN comments are about depression & doom. I don’t feel any depression and doom whatsoever. My reaction is “this is f’ing awesome.”

Interesting. I didn't know that. Do you happen to have a source? Minds underpinned entirely by information-sensitive gradients of well-being are theoretically feasible. But maybe even exceptional humans aren't wholly immune from experience below hedonic zero.

Congratulations to The Far Out Initiative on receiving its first @slatestarcodex grant! The initiative is heavily inspired by Jo Cameron, a woman born with a genetic condition resulting in immunity to physical and psychological pain (fear, anxiety, etc.). Unlike other forms of congenital pain insensitivity, her condition does not carry the same negative side effects. This discovery revealed a possible path to abolishing suffering — the path the initiative is pursuing from the following angles: The Anandaimonia Project: Research into solving human suffering by targeting the genetic basis of pain, both physical and mental. This would involve genetic and pharmacological interventions. The Ananda Lines: Creating lines of gene-edited livestock animals who possess the same resistance to physical and psychological pain. This aims to transform factory farming practices and reduce the vast suffering endured by these animals. The Far Out Initiative's goals are heavily aligned with QRI's mission statement. We highly encourage everyone to check them out! @cease_suffering

We seem grossly oversupplied on suffering, overall. I mean a little suffering now and then for good cause, that’s one of the spices of life, but this is absurd. Who ordered all this suffering? What were they even thinking? This is like, suffering for 10 trillion beings.
