Please like my X article about the ant Formica fusca, its biology and about its phoretic mites also here: x.com/wirthstef/stat… about: About the #ant Formica fusca (Formicinae), its biology, memory and #learningbehavior, the stress behavior of its #queens and its role as a transporter of phoretic mites with a special focus on mites of the Astigmata (#Acariformes). Formica fusca belongs to the #forestants and its distribution extends across the western #Palearctic. The species builds #nests near the ground and prefers warmer locations. Therefore it cannot be found in heavily shaded forests. The nests are #polygynous, meaning that one nest houses multiple reigning queens. The #workers can grow up to 7.5 mm and are therefore rather noticeably large, at least compared to species in Central Europe. Atypical for social Hymenoptera and adult insects in general, the adult workers reach an age of up to eight years. As with other Hymenoptera, ant nests are usually also #inhabited by other organisms such as other insects, nematodes, fungi and bacteria or mites. Some organisms can be pests, for example feeding on the #brood of ants. Others use this special habitat simply to be #protected or even fulfill #useful #functions for the ants by improving the #hygienicconditions. The following will only be about mites. Mites can visit ant nests independently, but then need special adaptations to avoid being attacked by the workers. Another strategy is #phoretictransport: Mites can be transported by #antworkers or winged sexual #alates to get into an (newly built) ant nest. This article is about phoretic mites that occur on Formica fusca. © Stefan F. Bees learn behaviors through a process called social learning, which involves observing and mimicking the actions of other bees. This form of learning is crucial for the efficient functioning and survival of the colony. #foxhoundbeeco #beekeeping #learningbehavior
