Tesla’s intent is questionable. Law is: If a fully built car (CBU – Complete Built Unit) is imported, then 70% duty must be paid. If a semi-assembled car (SKD – Semi Knocked Down Kit) is imported and the rest is assembled here in India, then 35% duty must be paid. If all the parts are imported and the entire car is built here in India (CKD – Completely Knocked Down Kit), then only 15% duty must be paid. In this, Tesla’s intentions seem questionable — it just wants to sell its ready made plastic cars in India, WITHOUT MANUFACTURING /ASSEMBLING anything in India AND basically wants to ONLY MAKE MONEY So what Nirmala ji did was absolutely right!!

There’s a big opportunity for India 🇮🇳 if we can build better EVs priced much lower than Tesla. It won’t be easy, but work is underway. @sumitkbehal You will be able to drive it on World class roads in India. Zero potholes, no water logging at all. There won’t be a chance that you find a cow on the road or someone driving in the wrong side. With all these facilities, the tax is justified.

Fin influencers are literally the most illiterate people of the country. Because Tesla is manufacturing in the USA, prices are low there. Had Tesla agreed to set up manufacturing in India, prices would have been less as they would have got custom duty concessions under EV policy. Kabhi kabhi Google search bhi kar liya karo.

@sumitkbehal Could not understand the sarcasm in this post, but my take: If someone is foolish enough OR rich enough that s/he wants to spend a crapload of money on what is essentially a snob-purchase, it's their choice. Maybe Tesla sets up production here to bring down prices - win/win.

Actually, the @narendramodi govt has gone too far taxing imports — making it hard for companies to operate & pushing the burden on consumers. Meanwhile, Indian industry still struggles with quality & scale. A balanced middle path was needed — same story with electronics, laptops etc.
