@CodeRed_dev Why are the indies always in the basement? Who put them all down there? Why don’t they leave?
English

@CodeRed_dev “indie” has turned into a marketing term
you’ll see fully funded teams calling themselves indie
and “solo devs” backed by a dozen freelancers
it’s not the same thing. it has to stop
English

@CodeRed_dev What about games like Mouse - PI for hire? I *suppose* their budget easily reached a good 3, 4 million USD
English

@CodeRed_dev Hard limit of team size to claim they're indie should be 5 people. Anything more than that is AA. Funding shouldn't be counted as 1 million goes a lot further in a former soviet country than it does in San Francisco.
English

@CodeRed_dev THIS
Seeing the entire spectrum from the pixel art godot slop to the 30million vc backed AA game under the same "indie umbrella" gives me brain damage
English

@CodeRed_dev Yeah the indie term is overused, BUT having worked in a similar studio situation, it still felt indie when you're aiming for AAA quality with 30 people. Devs were part time community managers, business guy did marketing, our rigger did 100% of the Chinese translation work, etc.
English

@CodeRed_dev They are AA+ indie developers with 20 years of experience in the industry and a bank account with half a million waiting for a game to be made, just like any other indie dev!
Its funny because they say "they are independent", yeah, but they depend on the HIGH budget haha
English

@CodeRed_dev People keep saying that if you self-publish, you are indie. But even Valve self-publishes their games, so Valve would be indie. And Microsoft too.
English

@CodeRed_dev We can come up with a category system. Like "solo indie", vs "small self-funded team indie" vs "I got an inheritance from a millionaire uncle indie" vs "truck with investors' money is backing into our garage indie"
I believe all of them are indie and good, just different
English

There are no clear lines for what any of the shit means. I have met indies that are running on redbull and a dream with 13 dollars in their bank account and I've met indies with 20 people and a budget of 1M and every single price point and team size in between. WTF is a AA dev? 30 people? 50 100? when does it become AA from indie when does a hobbyist become an indie. When do you get to AAA is it when you ship on console? Is it when you sign an exclusively deal with Microsoft or Sony? Is it when you have a CEO that makes a million a year or is it about the game? Can a AAA studio make a pixel art game can a indie dev make GTA 6? Who cares just go make shit.
English

@CodeRed_dev One thing has nothing to do with the other. You're confusing "indie" with "low budget". They're not the same thing
It means You're not with a AAA/ mainstream publisher. It has nothing to do with the size of your team or the money in your bank at all
Jesus, y'all 🤣🤦🏽♂️
English

@CodeRed_dev Is there a definition who is who? I bet you can debate about it for a week and never get a clear answer
English

@CodeRed_dev Indie is a broad term. Mostly it means 'independent' from investors and corps. Plus, when you just left the corporate position everything feels indie. But, yeah, better be called 'small studio'.
English

Our @WorkWhileAI worker survey is in. 54% of workers increased their confidence in their financials and trust us for their financial stability! 91% use real-time pay and use extra shifts to avoid paying credit card interest. as our ALUR Index hits 99.6% - We Take care of our workers.

English

@CodeRed_dev Because there's hardly a market to advertise for AA games. Indie games appeal to the people who want to support small devs and appreciate games as art forms, AAA games are for the masses to enjoy as entertainment, AA games are just in the awkard middle ground
English

@CodeRed_dev This shit needs to be spoken more often. 30M$ is well within AA budget. 30m$ on top of a game engine like UE is really nowhere near indie
English

@CodeRed_dev because "indie" is a useless bucket for categorizing games. 30 ppl who raised a bunch of no-strings-attached money are absolutely more "independent" than a department under Ubisoft making decisions with shareholders in mind, but less-so than a solo auteur

English

@CodeRed_dev More people need to understand that clair obscur is NOT an indie game 😭😭. It's a very good game, yes, but I feel like calling it indie is setting the bar unrealistically high for ppl like us making games off a miniscule budget and impossible time constraints 🫠
English

@CodeRed_dev Isn't indie stand in for "independent" meaning, if 30 ex Ubisoft devs are free to realize their creative vision independently without anyone else butting in I'd say they qualify as indie.
English

@CodeRed_dev Indie just doesn't have a clear or broadly useful definition in the industry anymore. Even as you say A and AA provides a better dilineation for team size.
English

@CodeRed_dev Yea, people pretend like the term indie is meaningless nowadays, but it isn't. We should just stop filing non-indies as indies. And absurdly successful indies that now have actual millions for their next games... are also a bit of a diff category
English

@CodeRed_dev My guess is for marketing. If you claim indie and most people don't really look into it much, you can potentially grab a wider audience and then journo's will run with it

English

@CodeRed_dev They do tho. No one calls themselves AA to my knowledge. They all say Indie now
English

@CodeRed_dev @Sosowski I keep asking the same! Almost every small-medium studio proclaim themselves indie dev, sometimes as you said with a 30 million dollar budget
English

@CodeRed_dev There's this belief that a game cannot be called indie unless the dev/(s) are working on miserable conditions. I find that believe quite romantic and flawed.
English

@CodeRed_dev Following the industry definition, Kojima is indie too
English

@CodeRed_dev its all for marketing, trying to impress people for attention but its pretty shitty for people who try to do it the genuine way
English

@CodeRed_dev To take advantage of gullible retards from Reddit who complain about corporations yet continue to buy their products.
English

@CodeRed_dev The moment you are not self published and or take money from someone to finance the game you should stop calling yourself indie.
But of course that is only in the case you're not a lying b-word.
English

@CodeRed_dev Nothing says “games discourse” like spending yet another decade emotionally litigating whether 30 ex-AAA devs with funding are spiritually equivalent to one sleep deprived guy making a goblin fishing game in his garage
English

@CodeRed_dev Expedition 33 must've been one of the biggest psyops last year.
English

@CodeRed_dev Fake marketing, fake visibility.
They wanna race with poor indies while on being a 30M budget
English

@CodeRed_dev by that rationale supergiant shouldn’t be indie.
English

@CodeRed_dev Some guy here tried to genuinely argue with me that "it literally doesn't matter that they had millions of dollars and got funding from a billionaire, it's still indie because it's self-published."
People on this website love to argue lmao
English

@CodeRed_dev @Sosowski People avoid being referenced as AA because it's not where are the cool kids 💀
English

@CodeRed_dev I still think AA is just the same tier as AAA. Only real difference is AA doesn't really have the time and funding to push new tech. But the scale of most games are about the same.
