@orenjalt It is 2026 and artist are still yearning to emulate analog way of working that will ruin their bodies. Shrimbacking is not the way to go.

@wizardbrainz @SebAaltonen Things that are abundant and easy will always have less perceived value, so the moat is still going to be some sort of skill which is multiplied by the ai but proportionally things will stay the same. You can be Shein, H&M or Hermes

@longiy @SebAaltonen The majority of games, even the less commercial creative ones are products though - whose utility is measurable. I see @SebAaltonen thinking as product centric too btw. And it's looking like AI will sail past the slop to the Uniqlo/H&M fast fashion stage very soon.

Unpopular opinion: Nobody will make money by single shotting a game or app. There's always somebody else who is willing to put in more effort. You spend 15 minutes, they spend a whole week. Of course their product is better. You beat their 1 week product with 1 month product, etc

@wizardbrainz @SebAaltonen Well, making slop is inherently unfashionable and not trendy in all creative endeavours. You are applying product thinking to art (yea heayh not all games all art yaddayada) which doesn't work because utility is not very well measurable.

@SebAaltonen I would say you actually furthered my point. With so much content the problem becomes discovery which is led by key influencers and fashion trends.

I recently found out that using a mouse with my left (non-dominant) hand is not hard at all for less demanding tasks. For focused work, I still need to use my dominant hand. I've been dealing with some carpal tunnel pain. Still manageable but needs to be addressed. Here are my thoughts and experiences. Switching to a vertical mouse pretty much removed wrist issues but over time I developed some pain at the base of the index finger. Standard mouse does the opposite: good on fingers, sucks for the wrist. All of these issues are due to "repetitive stress" so there is no solution that fixes it all. My current approach is to alternate between a standard and vertical mouse every couple of weeks. And as I said, I use my left hand when possible. This way, I give my right hand a lot more rest. I also tried submerging my hand in ice water for a couple of minutes. This is supposed to only give temporary relief but I experienced a lot less discomfort for 24 hours after one icing session. I need to get into the habit of doing it regularly.

It's actually insane how bad the quality of clothes have got recently. Some months ago I bought a second hand shirt. I found a drycleaning note pinned to it, from 2004. It was a regular Marks and Spencer's shirt. The quality was *much* better than of my modern shirts.

@doronstudio If you want to scale some design systems things you will need to translate the design elements and layouts into math. Which is sometimes slower than just manually doing it.

@KuroshiroX You should start with light placement first and the decide wether the place needs the lineart at all. If you are worried about losing the effort in the lineart then don’t do the lineart in places where it doesn’t matter to the final piece.

Getting lighting done is hard. Like how do you achieve a compelling composition while not loosing the details of the lineart? Every time I try to map out my light scenario the hierarchy gets messed up and ruins the effort put into the linework.

@TheRedDragon It incentivize lot of anti collaboration behavior (human to human) which is inherently antisocial and alienating with lot of longterm negatives. For some tech people being antisocial is a feature clearly.

Only argument against generative AI is that it learns from human work so they call it 'stolen.' By that logic, every artist is a thief. None of them invented drawing, they went to school or studied others and techniques and built on it. Every musician learned chords someone else invented. Every writer absorbed styles from books they read. AI learns exactly the way humans do, by observing, absorbing, and building on what came before. It just does it immensely faster & better than humans That's literally how learning works with everyone The only other argument i've seen is people say it looks like crap. Look where it's come in only 3 years. It's already fooling most people because it looks so good. In another year, you won't be able to use that excuse either.

@BenjiGameDev I‘d day that in AAA, arstyle is not being developed in collaboration with asset artists. Just follow the art bible from the artdirector

I'd love to hear the perspective of a AAA insider on this when a game's artstyle is being developed, it wouldn't surprise me if higher fidelity stand-ins are sometimes used. In the same way directors often score their movies with music from another film, to lock in the vibe
Bright Sunshine ☀️@KindaSortaMaebe

The lie behind claiming “AI content was only used for placeholder assets” is that any experienced dev knows it’s bad practice to use placeholders that are not obvious. you need the greybox or checkered texture so it stands out & you know at a glance that it needs replacing.

Im not sure how to articulate it but I've always loved Bungie's "house art style." All their games have this specific look to how the world is rendered, how characters are proportioned, How bulky armor is, how light reacts off stuff, etc. Its not cartoony but its not realistic. Its really interesting and ALWAYS makes Bungie games feel visually breathtaking in a way no other game studio can. its this.. idk, Bungie look that they never got rid of and I appreciate it. I wonder if they are aware of their own art style?

@XdanielArt but it is also way easier to create one-off pieces of software that you can hand to a client to let them adjust the parameters however they want now. technique is accessible & top of mind to a wider range of designers now

I don’t know if it’s a coincidence or an intentional nod, but I like to think the environmental labels in Marathon (on crates, bags, stacks, etc) are an homage to Virgil Abloh’s legacy.
