@HCH_Hill It does seem off to me that there isn’t already a defence of “trying to stop someone in the act of committing a crim” which would protect them from being sued and also prevent their employer from dismissing them.

Alternatively, the criticism here is not about current employment law but about the policy being wrong - and if it is underpinned by bad law then that law needs changing.
Sonia Sodha@soniasodha

Says a lot about the state of politics and politicians that so many of them are rushing to tell an employer what they "must" do in a situation where we clearly don't have the full story and the employer has a justifiable policy they don't like. thetimes.com/uk/crime/artic…

@7amesdrake @AaronBastani I’m not sure that’s relevant to my point, a lot of resources are put into and lost at the expense of saving a soldier’s (or in this case airman’s) life, that sends a message to their comrades regardless of how those resources are lost.

@APDBullock @AaronBastani Everything got shot down as indicated by the direction of the wreckage and burnt fuel spill. Iran also suffers from drought and the ground is completely dry so how did they get stuck in the mud. This is cope.

@Xentherida @Spacedog19 @AaronBastani Which isn’t to say it can’t be solved, we could have giant flywheels with generators/motors on them to provide that stability but it’s another thing we’d need on top of batteries and renewables, at which point nuclear looks a lot cheaper as it is a 3-in-1 package.

@Xentherida @Spacedog19 @AaronBastani Even if unlimited batteries existed you would still have this problem, and the more we move away from fossil fuels and nuclear which provide inertial stability, the worse this problem is going to get.

Britain is presently generating 71% of electricity from renewables and is exporting some to boot. Nuclear plus renewables is presently 85% of all electricity being generated. Good things are possible. Ignore the boomer Murdoch press.

@Xentherida @Spacedog19 @AaronBastani Wind and solar also have no inertia components to help keep the grid at 50Hz when there is a sudden fluctuation in power demand, nuclear does help maintain that inertia much better.

@Spacedog19 @AaronBastani Nuclear is very expensive and waste is also very expensive to store. Raw economics will always prevail over anything else. Battery tech getting cheaper is a big part of this too. Don't get me wrong, nuclear is great, but the lack of investment means it's costlier today.

@breeallegretti @Steven_Swinford But private betas are by their nature services that don’t incorporate all users, in this case petrol stations, they only the “private”selection you have made. Only once you have made it to “public” beta do you have all of your users, so how would they justify withholding payment?

Exc: Sir Keir Starmer’s pledge to help motorists beat fuel cost rises caused by the war in Iran has suffered a setback after problems with the government-backed price tracker. Downing Street has been pressing for the service, named Fuel Finder, to be ramped up as quickly as possible but performance issues have delayed its full introduction. The Times understands that 20% of petrol stations were not updating their prices weekly, despite the fact that many forecourts are changing their prices every day because of the volatility in the market. 15% of those signed up to the scheme have not reported a single pump price since regulations came into force in February. 10% of petrol stations have also yet to be uploaded to the service, which is designed to monitor their costs in real time. Under the regulations, fuel retailers must update the government portal within 30 minutes of any change of pump price. There is concern over the speed at which the data will be incorporated into user-friendly mobile and web applications, such as Google Maps. Whitehall insiders said that the function would not be possible until later in the year — significantly reducing the number of people who can quickly access the data. Privately ministers are threatening to strip a contract worth nearly £2 million from the company responsible for the programme. It is understood that the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) is holding twice-weekly meetings with the contractor to try to force improvements. The payment for the “private beta” phase of the project has been delayed and there is the threat of future payments being held up if the service does not improve. A DESNZ spokesperson said: “We are acting at pace to ensure that all fuel retailers register and report prices on Fuel Finder. In the last week we have secured Asda reporting their prices, and we are working with major search engines to integrate Fuel Finder data. Fuel Finder will play a crucial part in our work to tackle the cost-of-living head on, with potential savings for households who own a car of around £40 a year at the pump.”

@LoftusSteve @janrosenow I believe it is referring to reactive power which is the unuseful part of AC power (active being the useful part). This would be separate from pure demand, and has to do with how much inductive demand there is against how much capacitive demand there is.

@janrosenow The report says it was not the direct cause. What it says is that there was too much reactive power in the system (more power than demand) that caused voltage instability. There was too much power because of renewables.

BREAKING: The blackout in Spain and Portugal in April 2025 did NOT happen because of renewables. The final ENTSO-E report on last year's Iberian blackout is out — and it's essential reading for anyone working on the energy transition. entsoe.eu/news/2026/03/2…

@selentelechia My mothers cooking is never the best in the world, but she does things no one else I know does like nutmeg in her slightly lumpy mashed potatoes, and it’s something I’ve grown to love as it is unmistakably hers.

@CptHastings1916 Ah would that be the Benedict Cumberbatch one? I did enjoy that, made me relate a little too closely to Tietjens (especially on account of having Dutch speaking family).

@tc1415 It would be pretty easy able to see the number currently inside for murder, it’ll all be on the P-NOMIS database. Not sure if these guys would be willing to get you that data: mailto:OMSQ-SiC-publications@justice.gov.uk

This will be an extremely obscure and apparently weird question: but does anyone know where I can find the current (or current ish) number of convicted murderers alive in the UK? In prison or out on license. I've done a bit of guestimating and come up with 9k but this information must exist somewhere!

@LondonNewLibs It always strikes me as an extremely obvious barrier to listing in the U.K. if you’re one of the four senior roles in a company where they are all held by men, if you choose to list in the U.K. there’s a ~25% you lose your job, just as you’re in line for a potential pay out!
