Lastly, and this is the most important one. As a species we are affecting our environment. To go back to not affecting it means to go back to the pre industrial, agrarian era. Back to nature and 50% child mortality and death in middle age. This is not even an option, however as doing nothing means climate change still happens. We need to fix our environment through active measures and this means progress. The goal of this progress is knowledge. Knowledge and understanding of our environment and natural systems. Natural systems are complex ones that are computationally irreducible so we will need massive computation. Massive computation will require lots of energy, but that is not a problem as long as it has absolutely zero greenhouse gas emissions. The earth is a finite system, but not for energy, where the sun shines and more waste photons have to be radiated into space according to the laws of physics. Increasing energy use is merely capturing some of this natural waste, as long as it doesn’t blanket the earth and trap the energy. Abundant clean energy and compute will allow use to be in harmony with nature without going ‘back’ to it and without going forwards to industrial scale harm to our environment and emotional distancing from it. We will go forward to nature.

Another feature of low trust societies is a breakdown in the ability to spend more money to get better outcomes. You can spend more money, but the quality of the outcome is fairly random. You've likely observed with with brands over the last ten years.

The Chinese Communist Revolution consolidated its power by taking land from the elite. In the following generation, the previous elite once again reclaimed their social advantage. This is not an isolated phenomenon: A Thread on the persistence of status 🧵
