Some deem it divine retribution - a penance for rebellion. Others, a cosmic duel between good and evil. Yet the enigma persists: Why does the battle endure? Two millennia post-Calvary, the faithful still grapple. The battlefield eludes sight, yet its echoes reverberate. Our strategy? Our leader? The truth crystallizes: We fight not against flesh and blood, but against unseen principalities. Our battleground? The human heart - the theater of choices. Our strategy? The armor of God - truth, righteousness, faith, salvation, the Word. Our leader? The One who conquered death - the risen Christ. robsonbeans.com/2020/05/28/the…

@BeansRobson I ain't changing my accent to fit in with whatever perception a random person might have of me. If it's a service they are rendering me, that means l am paying and if they default on that then the buck stops with them.

The Zimbabwean accent in a foreign land is almost a class signal. Lose it and you may get better service. Keep it and you get assumptions. Some of us code-switch without thinking. That adaptation is survival, not shame. Answer yourself honestly. Do you modify your accent or how you present yourself to avoid being identified as Zimbabwean in a foreign land? I say, there is a dignity question buried deep in the accent conversation. The day you stop changing your voice is the day you decide your origin is not something to manage. Most of us haven't reached that day yet.

@BeansRobson It behoves us to change those stereotypes or perspectives. Trying to change the accent to blend in doesn't help the cause. Does it?

@BeansRobson Well in SA once you start speaking in English with that heavy Shona accent nobody takes you seriously and for Zimbos it's the Shonas who tend to have a heavy accent.

@tino_cash3 Which shows the accent itself isn’t the problem. It’s what certain accents are made to mean in certain spaces.

@BeansRobson It helped to open a very important conversation. There were Polish, Argentine & Nigerian parents who had spoken in their accents. They don’t have modify their accents. I understand the audibility and clarity argument. I am at a level where I don’t need to manage that.

@BeansRobson On this one I beg to disagree. My accent is not going anywhere. This accent is my struggle. My identity. It’s a part of me. I’m not sorry, everyone…work, business or anything is gonna have to deal with it

@PetersonTengen2 Yes, I could have. And the stats would still be correct. There is a reason why others are engaging the substance of the argument and you are fixated on the specific figure.

@BeansRobson I guess you also could have said remittances are above $100.00 since $3.4 Billion is also above $100.

Remittances to Zimbabwe exceed $1.5B annually. Foreign direct investment is under $400M. Meaning the diaspora is the real foreign investor. The government taxes remittances (downstream transactions) instead of enabling them. Should Zimbabwe create a formal diaspora investment bond or tax incentive to channel remittances into productive investment? Countries like India and Israel built diaspora bonds into national development strategy. Zimbabwe treats its diaspora as a cash machine while offering them no political representation.

Exactly right on the current state of affairs. The bulk of remittances are consumed, not invested, because survival comes first. However, some Zimbabweans in the diaspora are buying cars, building homes, purchasing stands. The high-skilled diaspora is already investing. The policy question is whether the government creates vehicles that channel that further, or whether it keeps treating the diaspora as a remittance ATM while rolling out the red carpet for Chinese FDI.

@BeansRobson @dzovani3 The majority of remittances go to fulfill immidiate needs for family. It is money that can't be repurporsed.Remember the majority of diasporians are low skills & usually dont have free funds.Maybe that will change as more highly skilled Zimbos migrate.
