When I was a teenager, I struggled with depression. I struggled with the feeling that I was worthless, with the numbness, despair and crippling isolation that comes with this confusing and mysterious disease. There were times when I hated my body and times when I wanted to hurt myself. It wasn’t until I got help—until good friends who saw me struggling intervened and told my parents —and until I started therapy and eventually medication, that I got better. I learned tools for how to care for my body and my mind. How changes to my diet, my exercise, my sleep could help. I learned how to train my thoughts on my value and on the goodness and beauty around me, instead of constantly playing back the tapes of despair. I also dove deeper into my identity as a creation and a child of an all-powerful and loving God—a quest that would lead me to a deeper faith and becoming Catholic. I’m sharing this because I know that many other people out there are suffering, too, or you know people hurting. I want you to know there IS hope and there IS healing. No one is doomed to struggle alone or to struggle without relief.
