Last week’s Silver Jubilee ID@Borders and Future of Travel Conference 2026 was a resounding success. Thank you to our members, and all speakers and delegates for the insightful and trusted conversations on the future of border management. Key highlights from this year’s conference included: • Digital identity frontiers: Deep dives into the European Entry/Exit System (EES) rollout and operational milestones, alongside international perspectives from the World Bank and UIDAI • Seamless travel in practice: Exploring the shift toward frictionless journeys through case studies like Japan’s Face Express and the practical implementation of Digital Travel Credentials (DTC) in Finland and the Netherlands • Future security: Navigating the ‘brave new world’ of AI-assisted biometric checks, morph detection with NIST, and the upcoming go-live of Eurodac The work we do is driven by the unique atmosphere of these events. As our CEO, Isabelle Moeller, observed, this is where barriers between the stage and audience break down and interaction flows freely. With no selling or advertising, these thought-provoking conversations allow us to collectively define what we need, where we will innovate, and how policy is working – or not working – in practice. 📺See who attended: Watch the day 1 and day 2 recaps 💬If you were there: Tell us what you thought in the comments 🤝If you missed it: Join in the trusted conversations at our upcoming events at bit.ly/bi-events A special thanks to our sponsors for their invaluable support: Platinum: @FaceTecInc and @IDEMIA_PS Gold: @Entrust_Corp, @SITAonline, @thalesgroup, and zetes.com Silver: @Fujitsu_Global 🗓️Save the date: We will be returning to Brussels next year on 22-23 April 2027. #BorderManagement #DigitalIdentity #SeamlessTravel #IDBorders #EES #ETIAS #Biometrics #FacialRecognition #Innovation

Day two of the ID@Borders and Future of Travel Conference 2026 continued the momentum with insights into the practical implementation of Digital Travel Credentials (DTC) and the evolving security landscape. The day opened with policy and regulatory updates from Mikko Hakkarainen of the @EU_Commission and Mika Hansson from the @icao DTC Working Group, setting the stage for how digital identity and border security must evolve in tandem to meet modern threats. The second day highlighted real-world progress through DTC case studies from Finland and the Netherlands, alongside a look at the Travel to Europe (T2E) app as a precursor to the Digital Travel Authorisation. Discussions also tackled security frontiers, including crime prevention and morph detection with @NIST, and the upcoming go-live of Eurodac. The afternoon culminated in a forward-looking exploration of AI-assisted biometric checks and a high-level closing panel on navigating the brave new world of border management. “As we conclude this Silver Jubilee event, I am incredibly grateful for the depth of our discussions,” said Isabelle Moeller, Chief Executive of the Biometrics Institute. “From the interoperability of digital credentials to the vital work in combating injection attacks and hybrid threats, the insights shared here ensure we continue to move toward a future of border management that balances the needs of citizens with robust security.” We are immensely grateful to our distinguished speakers for sharing their expertise and to all our delegates for their active participation in making this Silver Jubilee ID@Borders event such a resounding success. Our appreciation goes to our Platinum sponsors, @FaceTecInc and @IDEMIA_PS, our Gold sponsors @Entrust_Corp, @SITAonline, @thalesgroup, and zetes.com, and our Silver sponsor @Fujitsu_Global for their continued support. Day one of the ID@Borders and Future of Travel Conference 2026 started off with a deep dive into the evolving landscape of global border management and the digital frontiers of identity. The opening international keynote by Vedran Lalic of the @WorldBankGroup set the stage with a global perspective on the evolution of biometrics in border control. The first day featured essential sessions on the European Entry/Exit System (EES) rollout, including milestones, operational challenges, and its role in combatting identity fraud. Discussions also explored digital frontiers and India’s perspective on identity via the @UIDAI and @Frontex’s experience with Member State onboarding, and the practical shift toward seamless travel through international case studies like Face Express at narita-airport.jp, which uses facial recognition in airport operations. We extend our thanks to our distinguished speakers, and our sponsor members for their invaluable insights and all the delegates for making the first day of this Silver Jubilee ID@Borders event a resounding success. Our gratitude goes to our Platinum sponsors, @FaceTecInc and @IDEMIA_PS, our Gold sponsors @Entrust_Corp, @SITAonline, @thalesgroup, and zetes.com and our Silver sponsor @Fujitsu_Global for their support. Are you interested in using FRT but questioning if it’s the right choice or truly proportionate? Have you considered the risks the use will pose – including those you may not have thought of yet – and how to mitigate against them? Facial recognition in public places continues to make news. While the use cases are vast, ranging from law enforcement applications to private sector security such as in retail, the decision to implement must be guided by more than just “can we?”. We must ask “should we?” Our latest good practice resource – Facial Recognition Technology (FRT) in Public Places: Key Questions Before You Start – helps you do just that. The paper provides a structured framework to evaluate the feasibility and ethics of biometric projects before you commit significant resources. While drafted in the context of FRT, the guidance is relevant for any biometric captured in public without the intent of the subject and helps you make a vital go/no-go decision at the start of your project. Don’t navigate the complexities of biometrics in isolation. We recommend pairing the key questions with our Facial Recognition Use Case Matrix to ensure implementation is both effective and ethical. Face the facts before you start, find out more at biometricsinstitute.org/facial-recogni… #Biometrics #FRT #FacialRecognition #DigitalIdentity #Policy #GoodPractice

Our latest On the Pulse (OTP) Conversation took a closer look at a key theme from our seventh State of Biometrics Report: Keeping It Real. Artificial intelligence (AI) has both significantly improved the accuracy and significantly challenged the utility of biometrics. As AI-generated images, videos, and deepfakes make it difficult for biometric systems to determine what is real and what is fake, proving that real people are transacting online has become a critical challenge. AI bots reportedly account for over 50% of online transactions, while increasingly sophisticated AI agents create their own ecosystems with minimum human intervention. In this landscape, proving that a real, living human is behind a digital transaction has become a critical challenge and detection requires innovative solutions. We brought together a panel of experts to discuss how responsible biometrics can anchor trust in our digital world. Thank you to our speakers and their organisations for sharing their insights: • Ajay Amlani, CEO, @AwareBiometrics • Reinhard Hochrieser, SVP, Product & Technology, @jumio • Paul Hulford, CEO and Founder, attaininsight.com • Igor Janos, Head of R&D, @innovatrics Moderated by the Biometrics Institute’s Advisory Council Member, Roger Baldwin, the discussion highlighted that while AI significantly challenges the utility of biometrics, combining human expertise with AI-driven identity intelligence can lead to more reliable results, without compromising privacy. 🔗 Read the full press release and session highlights here: biometricsinstitute.org/keeping-it-rea… #Biometrics #AI #DigitalIdentity #Deepfakes #IdentityVerification #OnThePulse
