Tom Lehrer has left us, aged 97. An incredible talent who, in 2023, put all his songs and recordings into the public domain, making them free for anyone to use for anything, forever. What a remarkable bloke.

For me a little bit of Ordinary Time goes a long way. I much prefer the great Feasts and Solemnities of the Church's Year. The excitement it naturally provokes. Ordinary Time can feel like a great slog but that's just me 😄

People won't remember: - Your salary - How "busy" you were - How many hours you worked People will remember: - Whether you knew left from right on a kids' TV series

Nobody knows why or how the Carrick Stone survived, or to which deity it was once dedicated; it might have been used as a boundary marker, or perhaps it was somehow sacralised by the Picts once the Romans withdrew

@DrFrancisYoung There’s a 1980s bbc radio dramatisation of Witch Wood that was, hands down, one of the scariest things I ever encountered at a young age. If it wasn’t the rituals, it was the Pricker at his work. Utterly terrifying (and thus, engaging to the young mind).

It’s interesting that a surviving lone Roman altar is at the heart of the 17th-century Scottish witch-cult in John Buchan’s ‘Witch Wood’ (1927), and that isn’t the theme’s only appearance in folk horror - a Roman altar features in H. R. Wakefield’s ‘The First Sheaf’ (1940)

@CapelLofft Count Belisarius? Most of it is the political sphere, but theres a lot of Early Churchg dispute in the background, iirc

Has anyone ever written a novel (or made a TV series/film) that is set within the context of the theological/ecclesiastical disputes of the early church? So much material. A biopic of Athanasius. A novel about the row between Jerome and Rufinus. 'The Tall Brothers: The Movie'

A great narrative voice for any occasion. Love his recent work with @exitthelemming narrating some of the later Tolkien work. Also his narration of the Trollope Barchester and Palliser novels.

This one will hit a little different this Christmas. RIP Timothy West Brilliant in all fields, but a great radio man: Crisp and Even Brightly, Angel Standing, Vivat Rex, a lot of radio Shakespeare.

#RadioAdventCalendar Day 13 Crisp and Even, Brightly (R4, 1987) A real favourite of my Mum and me. A very witty, punny and spry retelling of the Wenceslas story. I *even* got to tell Timothy West once how much I enjoyed it, at a degree ceremony. bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00…

@exitthelemming That’s so terribly sad Sam, our sympathies to you and all your family. How blessed to enjoy such a long and rich life. I was fortunate enough to be one of the ceremonial officers at Bristol when we award your father an honorary degree in 2017. Here are some shots I sneaked in.

Genuinely appalling customer service from @asda @AsdaServiceTeam last night. Delivery was supposed to arrive between 7pm-8pm. Hadn’t shown up by 10:30pm. Told several things by several people, none of which were true and then told it was too late to do anything about it
