One day, you visit your favorite restaurant and they have removed your favorite sandwich from the menu. Instead there is a new sandwich. Sandwich 2. It is mechanically improved in every way. The tools are so advanced now, they can slice the tomato’s to atomic precision. The meat is from GMO free local farms, the bread is baked every morning in house with the freshest flower. By all traditional measurements, it’s a better sandwich. But it doesn’t taste the same to you. It’s… off? It’s like your old sandwich but just not quite right. You eat it and it’s not bad. It’s even good in some ways. But you can tell, this is a different sandwich. You come back again later and the sandwich 2 has been removed. Instead they are now serving a live service pizza. This pizza will be available for as long as they can profit on it. And every few months they add a new topping, Even if it doesn’t fit the pallet. And they will deliver it to you whenever you want. You don’t have to leave town to taste something from Chef Todd’s bakery. A lot of people enjoy the pizza. Even if they had a huge bug issue in the restaurant when they launched it. But you don’t want pizza. You want the sandwich. You would even settle for sandwich 2, and you’re not alone. The owner of the bakery makes a public statement and says sandwich 3 is in the works, but they don’t have the technology to make it just yet. The salami lids currently available just don’t fit. But it’s coming. Eventually… In the meantime, here is a bagel. A lot of people like bagels! It’s like a sandwich. Fuck you if you say otherwise. You wait and wait and wait for sandwich 3. Eventually it arrives and you rush to chef Todd’s bakery to finally get your fill. You have been craving a sandwich made by chef Todd for nearly 2 decades. At long last! The Bakery is back! But as you pull up, you notice… the sign has changed. It no longer says Chef Todd’s bakery. It now says: Todd’s tax and credit solutions A poster is hung in the window. “500 topping pizza and sandwich 3 included when you file” Mama mia

@RazorwireRPG What I love about New Vegas is it at many points barely fits the post apoclypse label because of the time progressed since the war and the advancement from tribes to nations. Sure there are still ruins of the old world but there also societies being built on the same scale.

Post Apoc fiction is in such a weird place: it's either the bleakest most fucked up sad shit ever (The Road) or some kind of lollypop 1950's funhouse (Borderlands, whatever Fallout is supposed to be). Games are the same as we have the divide between Eastern European titles and again: Fallout. One of the many reasons I love New Vegas (and the OG games) is that they straddle that divide well. Unfortunately, because nuance and tact is hard - we only ever get extremes today. Balanced thoughtful worldbuilding seems like a lost art.
