Democrats are the pro-gerrymandering party. The Virginia map isn’t anything new. It’s exactly what they did to Illinois: Extend Chicago (Northern VA) out into wildly drawn districts for the sole purpose of electing democrats.

The way Chicago Transit debates have evolved over the past year is really crazy…
I was arguing for fare gates & cracking down on fare evasion back in 2024, before the BART study came out or the bill even had legs, and got dogpiled by leftists for it.
Now everyone is on board!

CTA has hundreds of thousands of users who take hundreds of millions of rides each year. Like almost all public services, the focus has to be on providing value for customers. And yes, from an equity standpoint, poor Chicagoans deserve safe and affordable transit.

@ChicagoNewLibs I think the takeaway here is the contract was bloated and the money could be better spent on security through other means. Improving equity not through hiring, but the outcome of safer transit for all residents

It’s funny how people who were obsessed with a certain issue lose interest and go silent about it just a few years later. Look in the replies if the report on the success of reducing fare evasion and you see no dissenting replies or complaints.

I think we transit nerds are very protective of our off-peak service, but it's very hard to justify any sort of tradeoff where performance during peak commuting hours is worsened. It's when the most people are riding!

Hot take: Reducing transit on weekends actually reduces ridership on weekdays. Habits like consistency, and cutting weekend hours breaks transit-riding habits. This is especially true for people who work weekends and tourists, which are a growing share of riders in major cities.

@richsday I have the same worry, but the hope is that this would make other rules enforcement much easier. If you don't do any enforcement besides this, though, the system probably eventually reverts close to how it was before
