An open letter to @ProfSteveKeen regarding your recent comments about Bitcoin and Bitcoin mining.
Respectfully, I have listened to your comments on Bitcoin mining and it is very clear that you have no understanding of how Bitcoin mining works.
This is not a hill you I believe you should be seeing your reputation die on.
Specifically it is very clear that you have no understanding that it is a flexible user of energy that does not rival other energy users for its power, no understanding of the well established ability Bitcoin mining uniquely has to monetize otherwise wasted renewable energy, no understanding of how Bitcoin mining obviates gas peaker plants, and no understanding of the unique role Bitcoin mining is playing in methane mitigation.
You also appear not to understand that these facts are not some pot pouri of greenwashing claims from "Bitcoin supporters" looking to defend their assetclass but datapoints that have been repeatedly established in 24 peer reviewed journals, and 8 independent reports (including Cambridge University)
Your characterization of Bitcoin supporters as not understanding the interrelationship between global warming and energy dynamics is as patronizing as it is a reconfirmation of your own lack of research, given there are a number of committed environmentalists, climatetech investors and climate scientists who are avid supporters of Bitcoin mining precisely because it already can and is incentivizing renewable energy transition and methane mitigation at scale.
You also appear ignorant of the fact that the first generation research on Bitcoin mining that suggested environmental harm was debunked in peer reviewed study in 2023 and that is why the media has not quoted this study since.
Finally your contention that Bitcoin is "going to zero" because mining will become unprofitable shows again an appalling lack of basic understanding of the economics of Bitcoin mining.
Bitcoin mining companies are able to earn ancillary revenue through any number of means, they may be vertically integrated, they may mine using last-gen machines on stranded solar/wind, they may mine offgrid on otherwise wasted power sources such as landfills of oil&gas fields, they may be nation states such as Bhutan using Bitcoin mining on their otherwise surplus hydro energy.
These unique abilities of Bitcoin miners mean that far from being at risk, Bitcoin mining is by far the most resilience industry in the face of rising energy prices. The mere fact that Bitcoin mining exists and is growing in EU despite already very high energy prices is proof of Bitcoin miners' resilience to rising energy costs that affect other industries far more.
Your opposition to Bitcoin, and Bitcoin mining, appears more motivated by regret aversion, a well documented psychological phenomenon where someone who "misses out" rationalizes that "there was nothing to miss out on" rather than engage in genuine intellectual curiosity and humility by revisiting their decision, and this is leading you to invest an inordinately large amount of time dismissing a technology you have made an inordinately small amount of time trying to understand.
When someone of your standing in the field of economics talks so dismissively about a domain they have spent so little time seeking to understand, it does not weaken that domain, rather it weakened
1. your reputation
2. people's general trust in economists
3. the extend to which we esteem people in society with the title "professor"
If you want to continue to erode the reputation of all three, you are welcome to do so. Bitcoin does not care. Bitcoin miners will continue to stabilize grids, monetize wasted renewable energy, mitigate methane, obviate the need for gas peaker plants with or without you.
But if you ever decide to re-allocate a small fraction of the hours you have spend dismissing Bitcoin mining into understanding how the technology works that you are dismissing, I would be more than happy to connect you to any number of utilities, renewable energy experts, methane mitigation specialists, climate scientists, climatetech investors or battery engineers who can explain to you why Bitcoin is an essential part of solving the exact issues you claim to care about.

Software developers should not be liable for what others do with their software.
ISPs are not liable for internet crimes. Meta isn't responsible for the hundreds of thousands of scammers on its platform. WhatsApp won't be held accountable when someone uses it to coordinate a bank robbery. A gun manufacturer won't go to prison for a school shooting.
Just because something may be useful to a criminal doesn't mean it was intended or built for them. It's time we understood this for software as well.

🌪️🟢 NEW IN TORNADO CASH Roman Storm's defense just notified the court of a new Supreme Court decision which found that "mere knowledge that a service will be used to infringe is insufficient to establish the required intent to infringe." In the case in question, it was argued that "knowledge that a particular buyer plans to misuse a product with substantial legitimate uses, without more, does not support an inference of the seller’s culpable intent." The case ties directly into Storm's defense whose service was built for general use privacy, as the Government argues that its misuse for criminal purposes places him in a conspiracy with the perpetrators. Storm's Rule 29 hearing is taking place April 9th in NYC, in which the court will decide whether it will vacate his conviction on conspiracy to operate an unlicensed money transmitter.

So, something funny happened last night: First, I got a bunch of DMs from friends about how BIP 360 / P2MR wound up being cited in a major cryptography research publication by Google. Very cool! I post a tweet about it, go to sleep, then wake up and see it's already got a hundred likes. Nice! Then I check my X DMs. Apparently someone launched a Solana memecoin for #BIP360. So far I can tell they didn't allocate tokens, and then just kind of gifted me with some kind of fee reward mechanism on Pump.fun that I can claim using GitHub. I triple checked all domains and OAuth permissions, and consulted with my Solana dev friend @AdamBorco who runs a great service called @atomiqlabs to easily swap Solana ... sols? and real Lightning sats. I asked Grok about it and it was kind of impressed; how it was done was pretty clever. It says it's one of the cleaner, fairer launches of a memecoin on @Pumpfun, no massive insider distribution or allocation, so at least we got that going for us. This was actually pretty timely because I've been dealing with an illness that really knocked me out of commission for a good three weeks, and I'm just a contractor so I didn't get to bill for many hours at all. I have some savings for bills of course (all in on Bitcoin), but this does help a lot. I discussed this with @isabelfoxenduke and @Ethan_Heilman. Isabel thought it was funny, Ethan pretended I was joking, but we just kinda agreed to roll with it. I just figure, when something like this happens, you can either be a toximaxi and reject it as outright scammy, which certainly would be more principled, or I can just shrug and say, alright, well, there's now an army of degens who can incentivize themselves by promoting our work, I guess! Also, to be clear, this is not a joke (despite the proximity to April Fool's), and I have not been hacked. I will be updating bip360.org with something called a CA, I'm guessing that means contract address, so people can better tell which is the official BIP 360 memecoin. And also just so it's crystal clear: I did not launch a memecoin. Someone I don't know just did one out of the blue, gave me all the rewards from the trading activity on it, and I intend to use those to help support BIP 360 development and contributors, starting with an event at Vegas later in April. do you understand what just happened to one of the most used npm packages on the internet?
→ axios gets downloaded over 100 million times a week and today it got compromised
→ an attacker hijacked the npm credentials of a lead axios maintainer… changed the account email to an anonymous ProtonMail address… and manually published two poisoned versions
→ axios@1.14.1 and axios@0.30.4… neither version contains a single line of malicious code inside axios itself. instead they inject a fake dependency called plain-crypto-js that drops a remote access trojan on your machine
→ the fake dependency was staged 18 hours in advance… three separate payloads were pre-built for macOS, Windows, and Linux… both release branches were hit within 39 minutes. every trace was designed to self-destruct after execution too
→ there’s no tag in the axios GitHub repo for 1.14.1. it was published outside the normal release process entirely... bypassed CI/CD completely
→ StepSecurity called it one of the most operationally sophisticated supply chain attacks ever against a top 10 npm package
→ a routine npm install silently opens a backdoor… no warning… no suspicious code visible in axios itself
this is the wake up call all vibe coding bros need to hear right now:
→ if you installed either version… assume your system is compromised
→ pin to axios@1.14.0 or axios@0.30.3
→ rotate all secrets, API keys, SSH keys, and credentials on affected machines
→ check network logs for C2 connections
→ add –ignore-scripts to CI npm installs going forward
100 million weekly downloads and one compromised maintainer account…
that’s all it took to wreak absolute havoc
and I imagine we see a whole lot more of these… crazy times ahead for cybersecurity and vibe coding

🚨 CRITICAL: Active supply chain attack on axios -- one of npm's most depended-on packages. The latest axios@1.14.1 now pulls in plain-crypto-js@4.2.1, a package that did not exist before today. This is a live compromise. This is textbook supply chain installer malware. axios has 100M+ weekly downloads. Every npm install pulling the latest version is potentially compromised right now. Socket AI analysis confirms this is malware. plain-crypto-js is an obfuscated dropper/loader that: • Deobfuscates embedded payloads and operational strings at runtime • Dynamically loads fs, os, and execSync to evade static analysis • Executes decoded shell commands • Stages and copies payload files into OS temp and Windows ProgramData directories • Deletes and renames artifacts post-execution to destroy forensic evidence If you use axios, pin your version immediately and audit your lockfiles. Do not upgrade.
