Both crew members of the downed F-15E Strike Eagle are now safe and out of Iranian territory.
Here's what happened:
The weapons systems officer ejected with the pilot when their jet was struck Thursday night.
While the pilot was recovered quickly, the WSO used SEER training (Survival, Evasion, Resistance, Escape) to evade capture for 48 hours.
He hiked away from the wreckage, hid on an elevated ridge, and activated his emergency beacon.
Iran had put out a reward for his capture. It became a manhunt with Iranians racing to reach him first.
The rescue operation was massive and costly:
A fierce firefight with Iranian forces.
Two U.S. helicopters were hit, crew members injured.
An A-10 Warthog flying suppressive cover crashed in Kuwait.
Multiple aircraft had to be destroyed.
The WSO sustained significant injuries but is now safe.
This was the most complex combat search and rescue operation since the start of the war. U.S. special operations went deep into Iranian territory, fought their way in, and fought their way out.
Pentagon is withholding further details due to operational sensitivity.

I had a call with the Foreign Minister of Iran Abbas @araghchi . We discussed the situation in Iran and the spiralling escalation in the Middle East. Diplomatic solutions and de-escalation are urgently needed.
I emphasized the need to end the strikes on neighbouring countries and restore freedom of navigation in the Strait Hormuz especially regarding the humanitarian aspect of global food security with a focus on fertilizers and other essential goods.
Regarding the Iranian nuclear program Austria supports any diplomatic way forward that leads to a new agreement and full cooperation with the @iaeaorg .

Our signal to the United States and countries in the Middle East about the Strait of Hormuz was that we were open to discussing it.
As of today, I don't see any country lifting the blockade on its own, only joint steps can bring results. Ukraine has experience with launching the Grain Corridor in the Black Sea despite Russia’s attempts to block the flow of food and other goods. The situation now is similar, but it is about energy.
Our suggestion – based on our experience – was as follows. The war and the negotiations on reopening the Hormuz Strait can go in parallel. It’s worth trying to find a diplomatic solution, and this could be beneficial for both sides in the war.
An alternative step would be to control the Strait unilaterally, as Ukraine did with the Grain Corridor. Achieving this would require interceptors, military convoys to escort the vessels, a large integrated electronic warfare network, and other tools. We stand ready to help with this.
But for now, we are not yet involved. So far, no one has made such a request. We are simply sharing our knowledge. If one day our partners want to make use of it, we would be ready.
