So let me get this straight. A Royal Navy destroyer needed urgently in the Mediterranean… …is delayed because the dockyard only works nine-to-five. Not 24/7. Not through the night. Nine-to-five. In an age of drone wars and missile strikes. Is this really the state of Britain’s defence readiness now?

@richimedhurst It is a military ship of a hostile nation which is engaged in a war, this is what submarines do.

The Americans sank an Iranian ship near Sri Lanka, in international waters, and abandoned any survivors -- a war crime. This ship was outside the combat zone and on a training exercise. Literal Nazi behavior.

Despite there being no threat of any kind, the US submarine sailed away with no attempt to pick up survivors, leaving them to drown. Breaking the first and holiest unwritten law amongst mariners.

@IoWBobSeely Sorry Bob - the FOD risk of using the gun to shoot down a UAV is huge, the Ukranian Airforce lost an F16 after engaging a Russian UAV with the gun. Look back to WW2 and how many RAF aircraft were lost shooting at the V1 at close range. We need interceptor UAVS and EW.

We need to start learning lessons from Ukraine. You don't use a £500k missile to shoot down a £20k drone. Use your 27mm cannon. UK Armed Forces need to stop reaching for the gold standard for everything. Interesting that Ukraine is now advising us, not the only way around. Shared with you by a Times subscriber. Two things: 1) We’re not bombing painted airplanes. Decoys exist, but our sensors are better. 2) The Law Of Armed Conflict (LOAC) is very complex. Unless you know it inside & out, stop calling things “War Crimes”. Both make you sound hysterical & poorly informed. Thank you.

Spent the day at a rally with Iranians in London. I’m not naive enough to think this is the end - very far from it - it’s going to be incredibly messy and who knows what comes next. But the resilience of the Iranian people has left me in awe and hopeful
