@NBA__Courtside This is such a revisionist take. Trad media was on MJ‘s A$$ like crazy. Just because we didn‘t have unhinged SM doesn‘t mean we didn‘t get a 24h news cycle. In a way it was worse, because it was all curated. Imagine NBAonTNT was your only source and you couldn‘t fact check.

Colin Cowherd explains why it seems Michael Jordan has more ‘Aura’ than LeBron James: “There was no social media. Part of what makes Michael fascinating is we didn’t know about his private life. There weren’t platforms so you needed his basketball, and his fashion. That was your gateway to knowing Michael. You didn’t know about his marriage or private life. We get so much of LeBron. So it doesn’t feel special… You had to either buy Michael’s shoes or go to his games. That’s how you saw or heard Michael’s greatness. LeBrons everywhere. There’s nothing LeBron could’ve done about that. There’s a mystery about Michael and a uniqueness” (Via @TheVolumeSports)

@wiretaup There is a very distinct angry, vulgar, boundary-pushing moment in mainstream (male) youth culture from ca 96 through early 01. NWO/Attitude era part of that aesthetic. 9/11 killed it absolutely dead. The whole NuMetal/Woodstock99 conspiracy theory plays into this as well.

@JCup2013 Mainstream peaked in summer of 1999, then slow descent until the WCW takeover. When Austin and Rock were gone basically back to pre-Attitude basement-dweller image. Benoit killed any goodwill left.

@rynothethird @MibbyLegend @CommieGibberish Biggest cop out of movie history. Betrays the premise. Don‘t have to condone his actions, but realizing halfway through that your antagonist might be too relatable and turning him vanilla movie villain is lazy and cowardly. Esp since Duvall‘s char is most unlikeable ass ever.

A lot of older movies don’t really make sense anymore because Jews have destroyed our country so badly. Christmas Vacation: I’m supposed to feel bad for the guy with the big ass house and full family because he… might not get a Christmas bonus big enough to pay for a new POOL? The Family Man: Cage’s life sucks because he… has a smokin hot wife 2 kids and a 4 bed 2 bath in a safe White suburb? It’s nostalgic that THIS is what people used to complain about. The recent past was relative paradise.

@DrDisco8 Meine absolut liebste Indy-Story. Atmosphäre von hier bis zum Mond. Die charmanteste Love Interest. Die detailverliebte Backstory zu Atlantis. Worldbuilding durchgespielt. Es ist schlicht nicht in Worte zu fassen, welchen Eindruck dieses Spiel 1992 bei einem hinterlassen hat.

Für mich noch immer das großartigste Computerspiel in diesem Genre. Lifetime. Kein Einziges konnte ihm davor/danach das Wasser reichen. PS.: Ja Ja. Monkey Island, dies das. Indie Atlantis trotzdem Bestes für mich.

Something that often gets missed in all this, apart from @LadiesOfReddit “dinergoth” discourse, is how this is so concentrated in the lower class. It seems to be happening not in our major left wing urban centers, who you might otherwise think would be most inclined to it for ideological reasons, but in flyover country. In the home towns you go back to on your summers home from your fancy college, you see your third quartile friend wearing cat ears and long sleeves with thumb holes behind the grocery checkout. The elites seem to unleash these deviations from normality, but let them pass by without effect, while the lower class gets one shotted by it, having no immunity. Like picking up smoking when celebrities who would never touch cigarettes pretend to on TV.

@DMartyr @VBStrong_67 The third act of this movie is the biggest travesty and let-down in 90s cinema history. For the first 2/3 they asked all the right questions and then they pussied out with „muh, incel wimin beater was an ass all along“. Didn‘t help that Duvall‘s character was super unlikeable.

@praduv83 @blauer_geist Oldheads have been trying to gaslight us since the 90s that the original Thomas Crown affair is better than the Pierce Brosnan version. Bull. Shit. Pierce Brosnan version is empirically, overtly and objectively superior by every metric on God's green earth, stop it.

Both. If you think either one of them is "the bad guy", you've failed to understand the Hellenic pagan mindset. They didn't share the Christianity-derived vision of every fight as a proxy war between ultimate good (God) and ultimate evil (Satan). They thought of war as a clash between tribes over a conflict of interest. Each of these men was an ideal of masculine virtue, fighting for the cause of his tribe. Which is what heroes did. Modern Christians think that wars shouldn't happen, because everyone should be on the side of God, which is one of the two sides. Hellenic pagans thought that war would happen, because tribes and nations inevitably have conflicting interests. So, in their worldview, it was entire possible for two righteous, virtuous, admirable heroes to make war against each other.

@walterwhitepill It‘s a total banger, even if a boomer wrote it and saying otherwise is just showing an insecure, juvenile superiority complex befitting „smart“ „educated“ lib-millenials, not anybody claiming whitepill. It‘s totally fine to hate it if you‘re 20 and simping for an art-hoe though.

@no_one_quits What a dumb take. LB had barely gone mainstream at this point, Break Stuff wasn‘t a single yet. This is pre-SM hype Metallica, pre-Creed, pre-Nickelback, pre any mainsteam early-noughts rock. I agree with the sentiment, but the timeline is off by at least 5 years.

Re-drafting the greatest draft class in NBA history and it still wasn't easy. Do you take Steve Nash and his floor IQ or Allen Iverson and his relentless scoring? Do you go with the flash of Stephon Marbury, or the defense of Camby or O'Neal? Leave Shareef Abdul-Rahim out of the top 10? Tough choices still but the number one pick was a no-brainer..

@ThatLeafsBro @TheGOATSofball Yeah. It‘s a stupid „what if“ anyhow, because any of those guys trajectories might have worked out completely different under different circumstances. KB nearly broke Phil fn Jackson, I doubt any lesser coach would have been able to build a team around him.

@TheGOATSofball What a futile exercise. Their legacies worked out the way they did because of every single factor along the way. I‘m a Kobe stan, but he didn‘t eclipse AI before 01 if that and he might as well be Tracy McGrady if he never played for an org and coach the caliber of LA and Phil.

@HeyHeyItsConrad Not really a wrestler but still a performer: Vince. No two ways about it. Austin is my favourite wrestler ever, but the genius of Mr McMahon hides the fact that the Main Event scene totally blew in 98 and Austin would have had no material to work with if not for the Vince feud.

@JosephKahn Could be that there's a lot of overlap between Madonna and Gaga and the new generation simply prefers Gaga (ties into the current fad theory). Could also be that Madonna fans don't want to talk about anything she's done post-2012. The Super Bowl was essentially the end.

My 14-year-old daughter does not know who Madonna is, yet she knows who Prince, The Beatles, and Michael Jackson are. There are a couple ways to look at this, but I'm going to single out my main theory - her audience that made her the biggest star in the world at her prime were two main groups: Girls and Gays. These two groups have the fastest generational turnovers. Every group revamps itself and sets up new icons, but girls switch teams with higher frequency. They dropped Elvis for the Beatles, the Beatles for the Stones, Bieber for Billie Eilish. They will decide someone is now old or not relevant while guys still listen to their Metallica Master of Puppets album. There are also internal dynamics where a girl does not want to listen to her mother's music but a boy thinks his father's music is cool. As to the Gays, pop culture is their Super Bowl and they're always looking for the next thing. Obviously I'm talking in generalities in every single person is their own snowflake, but that's my overall read on it. This group can ramp up heat on an artist and then in an instant move on to the next. For the record I love Madonna and she's a huge influence on my work. New generations will rediscover her eventually.

@Empty_America Having a bunch of kids, taking them to Disney doesn't make her a "winner"--not by any stretch. Popping out babies DOES NOT take talent or skill. Good for her: she married a rich guy. So what. Doesn't make her special or interesting. He's already cheated on her at least once. BET
