@benlandautaylor There are satisfying accounts of why chariotry was preferable to cavalry, especially in light of the fact that many of the technologies and techniques used to make doing things from horseback easier had not yet been invented.

It's wild how we we know that chariots were THE dominant weapon in ancient warfare for many centuries but historians don’t agree on how you actually FOUGHT from a chariot, and there's no satisfying account of how it’s better than just riding a horse besides being rad as hell.

@BradRTorgersen We have lived in so long a period of relative peace and stability that most in the 1st world have come to believe that it is the state of nature.

The ultimate problem with strict isolationism is that it doesn't work. You can have no interest in the affairs of other nations, but other nations will never not have interest in yours. Likewise, where are your markets? To whom do you sell, and from whom do you buy?

Wife playing Cyberpunk 2077. Goes to meet Panam, carefully parking her car. Agrees to go with Panam to do the mission in *her* car. Wife watches from passenger seat as Panam pulls out onto the street and absolutely obliterates wife's parked car. 10/10 both still laughing.

‘Dune is about religious fundamentalism and the danger of charismatic lead-“ Actually it’s about the importance supply chain diversification

Stumbled upon a Soviet political joke from 1982 (Melnichenko #5850). Syrian defense minister Tlass requests Marshal Ustinov to upgrade air defense: — But we supplied Syria with plenty of surface-to-air missiles! — Well, could you please send some surface-to-plane ones instead?

I find that ancient epics (the Old Testament, the Sagas, etc.) have a way of relating events in a very stripped down, direct, unemotive way that is somehow more affecting than all but the most skillful literary technique.

@QuantumWitness Another good example is the 'Hubbert Pimple." M King Hubbert used modeling to make a prediction in 1956 that peak oil production would occur somewhere 1966-1971. Very close. Then some damnedfool came along and invented a new way to extract oil.

Damn, I wish I had learned about Julian Simon earlier. "He combined a then-recent upturn in prices with the notion that there is a finite amount of mercury on the Earth’s surface, plus the mathematical charm of plotting a second-degree polynomial with the computer."

@neontaster Yes, but I can’t machine a society that wouldn’t advance warfare technology. Who wants to fight knife to knife if you can stay safely away with a bow & arrow, then gun, then drone? The spaceship& sticks works in a declining civ, though.

Neal Stephenson’s concept of Amistics (which technologies a society chooses to avoid developing) works well as a rule of aesthetics as well. The clash of new tech and old lingering sensibilities just rings true.

A hugely underrated aspect of the Dune universe's appeal is how Frank Herbert built a world where people zip around the galaxy in spaceships but then fight each other with swords and knives. It makes everything 50 percent cooler than a world of ray guns and robots.
